As with any fandom, there are a lot of disagreements in the horror community. And as with any fandom mature enough, discussions about those disagreements are exciting. They can allow us to learn more about each other, ourselves, and the art we love.

Horror Classics Discussion

One horror fan opens up a huge debate when they ask an online forum of fellow horror lovers which classics they think are not just overrated but bad. While some people are shocked by the results, others are glad they arenโ€™t alone in hating movies they thought were beloved by all. Here Iโ€™ve gathered ten of the most classic films mentioned in the discussion and fansโ€™ issues with them.

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Some fans acknowledge The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a landmark piece of horror and say that the film simply wasnโ€™t for them. Others say the movie lacks any character development and is more annoying than scary.

  • The Exorcist (1973)

Those who donโ€™t like The Exorcist are split on whether the film is โ€œboringโ€ or โ€œfunnyโ€ instead of scary. The detractors also highlight that the filmโ€™s reputation precedes it in a way that makes you expect a great movie, and that expectation doesnโ€™t help the film at allโ€”some note, though, that they love The Exorcist III.

  • The Shining (1980)

Multiple people say that they canโ€™t stand The Shining. Some say they prefer the book and that you canโ€™t enjoy the movie if youโ€™ve read it. Others say Shelly Duvallโ€™s performance and the behind-the-scenes stories of how she was treated ruin the film for them. And, as will become a refrain in this list, some call it โ€œboring.โ€

  • Dracula (1931)

One of the earliest cinematic adaptations of Bram Stokerโ€™s classic novel of the same name and the first Universal Monster movie, 1931โ€™s Dracula, is considered a โ€œslogโ€ and โ€œthe worst of the Universal classicsโ€ by some horror fans.

Several people highlight that Bela Lugosiโ€™s performance as the eponymous vampire is iconic and fantastic in an otherwise not-very-good movie, and one goes so far as to say, โ€œThe rest of the movie is a disaster.โ€

  • The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Another film that significantly impacted the history of horror, The Blair Witch Project, has many detractors who see the film as nothing more than โ€œ1 hour and 20 minutes of watching three idiots bicker and argue like little kids in the forest.โ€

Itโ€™s a movie that one fan says is a love it or hate it with no middle ground, and there are certainly those who hate it.

  • Halloween (1978)

John Carpenterโ€™s slasher classic Halloween may be important for bringing the subgenre to the mainstream. But several fright fans find the film, you guessed it, โ€œboring.โ€

One says, โ€œโ€‹โ€‹What bothers me the most is that for all intents and purposes, he and Jason could be twins, but Jason manages to have ten times the personality of Myers.โ€

  • Friday the 13th (1980)

Speaking of Jason, many fans note that the original Friday the 13th is a ripoff of Halloween meant to cash in on the slasher formula and argue that itโ€™s not even a very good ripoff.

The usual complaint of โ€œboringโ€ is lobbed against the film, but one person goes so far as to call it โ€œone of the top three worst movies in the franchiseโ€ in part because it doesnโ€™t feature Jason.

  • Sam Raimiโ€™s Evil Dead Movies (1981, 1987, 1992)

Many horror lovers donโ€™t get the hype about Sam Raimiโ€™s original Evil Dead trilogy. Some say the original is cringe, others donโ€™t like how ridiculous the films are, and there are even those that say Army of Darkness is โ€œunwatchable.โ€ Thereโ€™s significant discussion of the franchise and Raimiโ€™s work in general, with some saying that they love some Evil Dead entries and hate others and a few people saying they find Raimi overrated as a filmmaker.

  • Suspiria (1977)

Suspiria may be the most well-known and well-loved Italian horror movie of all time, but that doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s safe from complaints.

Most fright fans who dislike the movie call out the overuse of the movieโ€™s prog-rock theme by the band Goblin, and some take issue with everything except the cinematography. One says the film is โ€œlike Tommy Wiseau had a really good cinematographer.โ€

  • Hellraiser (1987)

Conversations about movies are undoubtedly prone to hyperbole, but the fan who says the โ€œoriginal Hellraiser is literally the worst movie Iโ€™ve ever seenโ€ may take the cake for this discussion.

While theyโ€™re not the only horror fan to dislike the movie, they certainly go the furthest; most others focus on the lack of Cenobites in a film ostensibly about those creatures.
