As someone who watches new horror movies every month, I’ve compiled a list of excellent and terrifying horror films that capture my attention from start to finish and leave me with a sense of dread for weeks after I turn off the TV. Ten films stand out as my ultimate horror favorites, from the atmospheric film Vivarium (2020) to the battle-royale-style movie Would You Rather (2012).

This action-packed Korean zombie horror film is about a busy father who struggles to make time for his daughter around his hectic work schedule. After his daughter visits him for the weekend, they take the train back to her mother's house. But on their way, the zombie apocalypse begins, turning a mundane train ride into a fight for survival.

When a young lesbian couple vacations at a remote lake house owned by one of the women's parents, terrifying secrets about her past come to light, making her girlfriend fear that she may become the next tragedy her lover covers up. A simple yet brutal act sparks a high-stakes rivalry between the two women.

  • Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Nocturnal Animals is a psychological horror that impacted me for weeks after I watched it. When a woman receives a novel manuscript from her ex-husband, she reads the tragic and violent story while confronting her own past.

  • The Platform (2019)

In a dystopian prison, a man wakes up with a strange cellmate in cell number 48. He soon learns that each month, the prisoners are assigned a new cell, and that number determines whether or not they get to eat. The prison is a skyscraper, with each cell stacked atop one another.

The cell at the very top is cell number one, where the prisoners get first pickings of an enormous feast that descends on a platform in the middle of the cell until it reaches the bottom, where the prisoners must pray others left a couple of scraps so they can survive. Where will the new cellmates end up next month?

  • Cube (1997)

Image Credit: Odeon Films and Trimark Pictures.

When a group of strangers wakes up in an odd cube-shaped prison without explaining why they've been placed there, they soon realize that many of the connected rooms are booby-trapped with creative weapons that can kill them instantly if they enter the wrong one. Can the group escape the prison or uncover where they're held captive?

  • Ma (2019)

Ma tells the story of an isolated woman who befriends a group of teens by offering to buy them alcohol. Soon, Ma hosts the teens in her basement so they can party, but she begins acting odd as her relationships with the teen's parents and her tragic past reveal themselves.

  • The People Under the Stairs (1991)

Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs is a tale that warns us about socioeconomic class disparities and the terrible power of the ultra-wealthy. When a young boy's family is threatened with eviction, he breaks into his landlord's home only to find a house full of abducted boys tortured and trapped under the stairs.

  • Vivarium (2020)

When a young couple visits a cookie-cutter neighborhood to look for a new home, they find themselves trapped. No matter how far they walk, the two only find identical houses and yards as far as the eye can see.

Then, as they search for a way to escape, a strange parcel appears at their doorstep. Inside is the creepiest child I've ever witnessed in horror movie history, with instructions to raise the child as their own.

  • Us (2019)

Jordan Peele's psychological horror film Us is about a family who returns to their mother's childhood home, where four assailants soon attack them. But the absolute terror begins when the family discovers each attacker is one of the family members doppelgangers.

  • Would You Rather (2012)

When an orphaned young woman and her brother must find a way to pay for his medical bills, the woman meets a mysterious and wealthy man who offers her a spot at his dinner party with a chance to win riches beyond her wildest dreams. But when she arrives, she realizes the stakes of the contest are much higher than she could have imagined.
