Anything for Jackson (2020)
"Anything For Jackson" is a film that deserves more recognition for being the powerhouse that it is. It is directed by Justin G. Dyck and written by Keith Cooper. They are better known for creating family-themed Christmas and romance movies in Canada, but "Anything For Jackson" differs significantly. Audrey and Dr. Henry Walsh have been devastated by the loss of their beloved grandson Jackson. They are quite willing to do anything to get him back, including using dangerous Satanic rituals they don't understand to bring their grandson back in a "reverse exorcism." Beautiful performances full of pain and a frightening demonic force make this film hard to beat.
The Feast (2021)
"The Feast" is a deeply disturbing and strange Welsh folk horror film filled with a tainted gorgeousness. It is set in the Welsh countryside and filmed in the Welsh language. Most of the time, you think you might have an idea about where the narrative of a horror film will go, but "The Feast," directed by Lee Haven Jones and written by Roger Williams, definitely has some surprises for you, even if you've watched "Hereditary." The film stars Annes Elwy as the unnerving Cadi, and Nia Roberts, and Julian Lewis Jones.
Lovely Molly (2011)
"Lovely Molly' was directed by Eduardo Sรกnchez, one half of the team that directed "The Blair Witch Project" and has since directed in television and films like "V/H/S/2" and the upcoming "Satanic Hispanics." The film stars Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, and Alexandra Holden and concerns a woman who seems to be possessed by a supernatural force of unknown origin. The force not only possesses her but attacks her too, and Molly starts to behave in murderous ways without knowing that the home where she and her husband live has a hidden underground shrine.
A Dark Song (2016)
In "A Dark Song," Sophia Howard, played by Catherine Walker, convinces an occultist to perform a ritual that will take months to complete and summon her guardian angel. Neither one of the two people is telling the other the truth, and the man, Joseph Solomon, played by Steve Oram, tries to take advantage of her by telling her she needs to perform certain acts for the ritual which aren't true. Sophia is desperate to speak with her deceased son, so she will do whatever she can to achieve that goal, but when Solomon becomes injured, things get even more dangerous.
Caveat (2020)
"Caveat" is an Irish horror film where an amnesiac man is hired to care for a woman who will become catatonic without warning and, as part of his employment, must stay in a harness in the woman's home on a remote island. None of this sounds like a good idea for people who want to stay alive and healthy, but Issac, played by Jonathan French, agrees. Horrifying things start happening. Olga roams the house with a crossbow. There is a creepy stuffed rabbit and people who won't stay dead in this film, so there's more than enough terror to go around.
Amulet (2020)
"Amulet" is written and directed by Romola Garai and concerns a soldier, Tomaz, who escaped from his home country to London. He is homeless and works as a day laborer when he can until the squat where he lives burns down. He is found by a nun, Sister Claire, and offered a place to stay if he cares for the home where a mother and daughter live. Hints that he might not be a good person surface as he becomes attracted to the daughter, Magda. Tomaz finds that Magda keeps her mother trapped in the attic, and he begins to fear for Magda's safety and his own.
The Invitation (2015)
"The Invitation" is another film that is not what it seems. Directed by Karyn Kusama and starring Logan Marshall-Green, Tammy Blanchard, Michiel Huisman, and Emayatzy Corinealdi, it is about a couple invited to a dinner party that soon becomes menacing. Will and Kira attend the party held by Will's ex-wife Eden and her new husband in the Hollywood Hills. The hosts announce that they are members of a group that supposedly helps people work through their grief called The Invitation which seems more like a cult. Will doesn't trust Eden or her husband, and with good reason.
Relic (2020)
"Relic," co-written and directed by Natalie Erika James and starring Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote as three generations of women in a family, will frighten you and make you think about family ties. Edna, the mother of Kay and grandmother of Sam, has signs of dementia and disappears from the family home. The home seems to be covered with a toxic black mold, and loud sounds without clear origin are heard from the walls. Glimpses of a presence appear and disappear, but it is hard to tell what is real in a house that seems haunted, but the women are not sure what the cause might be.
The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)
"The Blackcoat's Daughter" is written and directed by Osgood Perkins and comprises three stories about three girls. It stars Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, Lauren Holly, and James Remar. The three stories are entitled Rose, Joan, and Kat, and as you watch, who the girls are and what happens to them are slowly revealed. The school where they live is a religious school run by nuns, and someone may be possessed by Satan. But what is the truth, and what are the lies? That's what you will find out when you watch it.
Starry Eyes (2014)
"Starry Eyes" was co-directed by Kevin Kรถlsch and Dennis Widmyer and stars Alexandra Essoe, Amanda Fuller, and Noah Segan. Sarah Walker wants to become an actress but hasn't achieved the success she wants. When she feels betrayed by a friend who offered her a role in his film, she consents to give a producer from Astraeus Pictures what he wants. Afterward, she finds herself in pain and going through some kind of sickness where her hair falls out, and she starts losing her teeth. This film has a lot of body horror, and Alexandra Essoe really gives it her all. It's a disturbing film about getting what you want without expecting that the chance at happiness comes with severe consequences and a heavy price.
