Scary movies can be a little strange sometimes. Vampires, zombies, and ghosts aren't exactly normal creatures. But what about bizarre horror films? The ones that make you scratch your head and think, “What just happened,” even while you love every minute of the movie?

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
Shinya Tsukamoto's body horror film, "Tetsuo: The Iron Man," is a favorite of those who like their movies wild. The premise is pretty simple, but it goes to such extraordinary places. An ordinary working man in Japan has dreams, and his body starts turning into metal. That's it. But simultaneously, you can't quite describe precisely how wild this movie is.
Videodrome (1983)
David Cronenberg has made a lot of films that are outside the norm, but "Videodrome" has such universal appeal. No, really. Because people are more familiar with the film, it seems a lot less out there than it is. In the film, James Woods puts a videotape in his stomach to be programmed to carry out specific actions. The symbolism and unease with the role of cinema are entrancing, bound up with the film's fetishistic sexuality and the eroticism of death.
The Lair of the White Worm (1988)
Most of Ken Russell's films bear his personal stamp of eccentricity. "The Lair of the White Worm" has aristocratic snake ladies and bagpipes as weapons against the snakes and doesn't forget to include a violent Roman dream sequence and a truly impressive "white worm." It ends on an ironic note that kicks you in the pants.
Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (1977)
Everything that qualifies "Death Bed: The Bed That Eats" for this list is apparent in the title. One of the oddest folk horror films ever made, it is a surreal movie about a bed that eats you when you try and sleep in it, but only every ten years when the demon inside it awakes. The film became such a cult favorite through bootlegged editions that it finally got a theatrical premiere in 2013.
Boxing Helena (1993)
"Boxing Helena," a film directed by Jennifer Lynch, has quite a reputation, even now. It is about an obsessed surgeon who wants a woman he can't have, so he amputates her arms and legs; this is horrific and frightening in a particular way. It angered and fascinated people in equal measure, kind of like the central character Helena.
Rubber (2010)
Quentin Dupieux's "Rubber" is a very odd film about a sentient tire that becomes a serial killer. You read that correctly. The film is oddly frightening and funny at the same time. It starts as an open-air play and plays with the idea that we are all spectators in our lives, and then the tire starts making animals and human beings explode. Robert, the tire, does watch television and takes a shower too.
Titane (2021)
Julia Ducournau"s Titane is a body horror film about a serial killer who grew up unloved and became an object of desire. She finally finds her home with a heartbroken fire captain who accepts her no matter who she is and happiness and connection through having sex with cars.
Society (1989)
Brian Yuzna's "Society" is very ordinary on the surface. It isn't until you get further into the film that you see its central theme: the rich are different. When I say they are different, they are an entirely different species that eats human beings. The Shunt, the feeding process of the member of this society, is something that horror fans still talk about.
Possession (1981)
Andrzej ลปuลawski's "Possession" is a rollercoaster ride of heightened emotions and adultery. It is ostensibly the tale of a marriage gone wrong, and the wife is being unfaithful. She is violently in love with a Lovecraftian monster, but is any of this real? The actors are so thoroughly committed to their emotional highs and lows that watching them go through them is disturbing.
Xtro (1983)
"Xtro," directed by Harry Bromley-Davenport, is a film that must be seen to be believed. A man disappears in a strange light and then returns in the most peculiar way possible, being birthed from a woman's body as a full-grown man. There are aliens' eggs, clowns, a panther in the countryside of Britain, and so much more to boggle your mind.
