No thriller is complete unless a villain antagonizes the heroes and innocents of the movie. One of the best (or worst) attributes of the scariest bad guys is their dialogue and the ability to terrify moviegoers with their words. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Hannibal Lecter's response to Senator Martin, who pleads for his help in finding her missing daughter, who Buffalo Bill kidnaped: "'Amputate a man's leg, and he can still feel it tickling. Tell me, Mom, when your little girl is on the slab, where will it tickle you?'" This sadistic line is the stuff of movie legends.
IT (2017)
Pennywise the Dancing Clown menacing Bill Denbrough and his adolescent friends about Bill's missing brother, Georgie: "'This isn't real enough for you, Billy? I'm not real enough for you? I was real enough for Georgie,'" confirming Bill's little brother isn't just missing.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Anton Chigurh, a cold-blooded mercenary hired to recover $2 million stolen by Llewelyn Moss, threatens the life of Llewelyn's wife, Carla Jean unless he returns the money. Moss dies without giving in to Chigurh's demands, but that doesn't stop him from going after the grieving widow.
When Carla Jean returns home from her mother's funeral, Chigurh awaits her. They have a brief conversation in which she pleads for her life, telling him, "'You don't have to do this,'" to which he coldly replies, "'Everybody says that.'" His words make it clear that he's done this before and has no reservations about carrying out his threats against her.
Scream (1996)
While playfully engaging in what she believes to be a prank telephone call from her friend Randy Meeks, Sidney Prescott tries to rush him off the phone. The voice on the other line warns, "'You hang up on me, and you'll die just like your mother! Do you wanna die, Sidney? Your mother sure didn't.'" It's only then Sidney realizes that it's not a prank call.
The Prophecy (1995)
Thomas Daggett is a former seminary student who has lost his faith. Years later, he comes face-to-face with Lucifer, who taunts him by whispering in his ear, "' Little Tommy Daggett, how I loved listening to your sweet prayers every night.
And then you'd jump in your bed, so afraid I was under there. And I was!'" He's proving to Daggett that the devil is alive.
The Shining (1980)
After a month of winter isolation at the Overlook Hotel, Jack Torrance's deteriorating mental health fully manifests when he menaces his wife with the lines "'Wendy, darling, light of my life! I'm not gonna hurt you.
You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in.'" Torrance proceeds to go on a murderous rampage.
Candyman (1992)
Graduate student Helen Lyle is writing a thesis on urban legends. She begins researching the story of Candyman, rumored to haunt Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing project.
Helen doubts his existence until she encounters the specter in a parking garage, where he tells her, "'Be my victim.'" She becomes just that when she's charged with multiple crimes committed by Candyman.
Event Horizon (1997)
The mysterious happenings on the titular ghost ship peak when Dr. Weir falls victim to the Event Horizon's frighteningly realistic hallucinations.
After he's possessed by the ship's evil spirit and gouging out his own eyes, Captain Miller confronts Weir asking, "'Oh. My. God. What happened to your eyes?'" Weir replies, "'Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.'"
Saw (2004)
"'Game over.'" After pretending to be a corpse for the entire movie, this was the heartless retort John Kramer (aka Jigsaw) cruelly hurled at Adam before leaving him to die in a locked room at the end of the original film in the Saw franchise.
Hellraiser (1987)
After unwittingly opening a puzzle box that was a gateway to another dimension, a trio of demons called Cenobites beset Kirsty Cotton and plan to take her to Hell.
Kirsty offers to prove one of their captives escaped and is alive in exchange for her life. Pinhead, the lead Cenobite, admonishes if she's lying, "'We'll tear your soul apart,'" delivering one of the evilest lines in movie history.
