“Scream” has got to be one of the all-time favorite slasher films. It has everything a slasher film needs. It is cool, meta, and bloody. The creation of director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson, the first film in 1996, has spawned a franchise of six films and a television series. Everyone loves Ghostface, Sidney, and the new final girls, Tara and Sam. So what do you watch after you have seen every film and watched the show? Here are some ideas.

Sick (2022)
This smart slasher, penned by Kevin Williamson and Katelyn Crabb and directed by John Hyams, is set during the pandemic, but no one is going to tell them that it's "too soon." It is a lean and thrilling ride that works the idea of trust that many of us have lost during the pandemic into the narrative. Post-"Scream" trust has become a big issue for characters in such films, and Williamson knows how to construct a dramatic and intense situation.
You're Next (2011)
"You're Next," directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, is a great slasher and a hilarious film. It is meta but in a different way. Sharni Vinson as Erin is one of the most incredible new final girls, and nothing is ever quite what it seems in the film. What starts as a warm family gathering becomes a home invasion and then bursts into different realms of the genre with each new revelation.
Party Hard, Die Young (2018)
"Party Hard, Die Young" was a pleasant surprise. Germans on a graduation trip find themselves being hunted down by a clever killer who uses their cell phones against them. Directed by Dominik Hartl, this film takes flight from many slasher conventions but delivers some innovative punches with the masked menace in Croatia. It is a slasher that spends more time developing the characters, which works to its advantage.
Initiation (2020)
"Initiation" is another slasher that takes a slightly different route but has strong similarities with Scream. In the film, directed by John Berardo, social media is used to mock the victims of a fraternity who are committing sexual assaults on campus. Female characters take the lead in investigating who the killer might be, which leads to a surprising conclusion.
Freaky (2020)
"Freaky: is a movie about a serial killer who switches bodies with a girl in high school. It is slasher goodness with a sense of humor. Directed by Christopher Landon, written by Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon. Vince Vaughn stars as The Butcher, and Kathryn Newton stars as Millie. High school, a serial killer, and the wacky body-switching hijinks add up to fun, and remember that "Scream" has always been fun.
Cherry Falls (2000)
"Cherry Falls" has another interesting premise. The town is threatened by a serial killer who, in a reversal from the standard rules of a horror movie, as described by Randy in "Scream," targets virgins as his prey. The film stars Brittany Murphy in a star-turn Jay Mohr, Gabriel Mann, and Michael Biehn. The Australian film director Geoffrey Wright directed it, and it is one of the more unusual slasher films.
Happy Birthday to Me (1984)
"Happy Birthday To Me" is a slasher film from the 80s that concerns a young woman, Ginny, who belongs to a group of socialites, and on her birthday, her friends start being killed by an unknown assailant. Melissa Sue Anderson, from the television show "Little House on the Prairie," plays Ginny, and Glenn Ford plays her psychiatrist. Ginny starts to fear that she may be killing her friends in a fugue state, but is that really true? One person is murdered with a shish-ka-bob, so it does have some original kills.
Tragedy Girls (2017)
In this comedic slasher film, two high school students want to get followers for their blog so badly that they start committing murders after catching a serial killer. Phew! The girls have their priorities which include prom. The film stars Alexandra Shipp, Brianna Hildebrand, Josh Hutcherson, Craig Robinson, and Jack Quaid. There is a bit of a role reversal in this film, but it is a slasher.
Valentine (2001)
"Valentine" is a holiday-themed slasher about four friends who a killer stalked after an incident in high school when a young man was humiliated and accused by one of the girls of sexual assault. It stars David Boreanaz, Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, and Katherine Heigl and was directed by Jamie Blanks, who also directed "Urban Legend." While the film was not well received then, it has become a cult favorite.
Sorority House Massacre (1986)
"Sorority House Massacre" predates "Scream" by ten years, but when you watch it, you might recognize some of the influence that this film likely had on "Scream." It is a classic slasher film, but it was written and directed by a woman, Carol Frank. It is connected to the franchise "The Slumber Party Massacre," which was directed by Amy Holden Jones and written by the feminist writer Rita Mae Brown. Both series and films have more of a woman's viewpoint than most slasher films.
