Many complain that characters in scary films aren't very smart, but is that really true? Which characters in terror films are the most intelligent and motivated? Who are the horror heroes that you would want on your side when things go wrong?

  • Prince of Darkness (1987)

In this John Carpenter film, Victor Wong, as Professor Howard Birack, a quantum physicist, steadfastly refusing to put himself in danger of going outside, is sensible and wise. Other characters also attempt to fight Satan and should get much credit for dealing with a situation and coming through to save the world. Through reasoning and self-sacrifice, Lisa Blount as Catherine, Jameson Parker as Brian, and Donald Pleasance as Priest all do their part. It's not a problem you face every day and has a great difficulty level, so it proves that these characters are not to be taken lightly.

  • You're Next (2011)

You're Next features one of the genre's female protagonists who are most well prepared to deal with a home invasion, Sharni Vinson's Erin. Just how prepared was a shock to the rest of the characters in the film and the audience. No one expected her to be such a survivor. Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, the movie is full of genre stalwarts, like Barbara Crampton and AJ Bowen, and genre writers and directors Larry Fessenden, Amy Seimetz, Ti West, Joe Swanberg, and Calvin Lee Reeder. The film is funny and horrifying, and the writer Simon Barrett plays one of the home invaders. Erin would be a great person if you were assembling a team to survive a horror movie.

  • Dawn of the Dead (1978)

While things don't turn out as planned, and they lose some of the party, considering they are going through the fall of human civilization, the heroes of George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead did well. The two most level-headed people at the party, Peter, played by Ken Foree, and Francine, played by Gaylen Ross, would be welcome on any team I assembled. Their most vital qualities are, ironically, their empathy for others and their inner ethical cores. They do the right thing for the right reason and only kill when necessary, so they never go overboard emotionally.

  • Hellraiser (1987)

Clive Barker's Hellraiser has an all-star with the character of Kirsty, played by Ashley Laurence. Dropped into a hazardous situation with creatures from Hell demanding that she come with them to be tortured forever, she doesn't hesitate. Kirsty immediately starts asserting herself, bargaining, and figuring out what is happening in her Dad's house. Kirsty is a person who can face nearly anything and come out on top.

  • Green Room (2015)

Green Room was directed by Jeremy Saulnier and stars Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Imogen Poots, Macon Blair, and Patrick Stewart, and is about a punk band that accidentally crosses a group of neo-Nazis who own the bar where they are booked to play. When Pat, the leader played by Yelchin, accidentally sees that they have murdered a young woman, the Nazis want to kill them too. Then a horrific battle occurs between the heavily armed Nazis and the musicians. The band, along with the friend of the young woman who was murdered, fight the best they can. While initially discouraged, they find the courage to stand up to the terror and improvise weapons and methods of attack. This quick and innovative thinking comes from intelligent people you would want to battle by your side.

  • 30 Days of Night (2007)

Image Credit: Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.

Melissa George as Stella Oleson and Josh Hartnett as Eben Oleson are a vampire-fighting team who work wonders against one of cinema's most vicious packs of vampires. What makes things so much worse in this situation is that Barrow, Alaska is in a cycle of the year with thirty days of continuous night. David Slade directs the film, and it has become a favorite among horror fans. Stella and Eben continually think of solutions to fight vampires who seem almost indestructible. It is a combination of brains and self-sacrifice that saves the remaining people in the town on the last day of the sunless month. The bravery of these characters shows that they would make great additions to any group trying to save others.

  • Tremors (1990)

Two good old boys, Fred Ward, as Earl, and Kevin Bacon, as Val, a seismologist Rhonda, and a prepper couple, Michael Gross, as Burt, and Reba McIntire, as Heather, come together as a surprisingly proficient team fighting three giant killer worms. Rhonda provides a lot of scientific background, Val and Earl are brave and fast on their feet, and Burt and Heather bring the firepower. In the case of "Tremors", teamwork makes the dream work and puts giant killer worms out of business.

  • Alien (1979)

Ellen Ripley is a legend among horror heroes. After being betrayed by Wayland-Yutani, she has found numerous ways to go to war against one of the most dangerous creatures in the Universe. Ripley doesn't give up, no matter how bad it gets or how the odds are stacked against her. That kind of indomitable spirit makes someone a formidable opponent, and she becomes almost as indestructible as the Alien itself.

  • The Invisible Man (2020)

Elizabeth Moss, as Cecilia Kass, is one tough woman. She may not be fighting supernatural beings, but she is fighting someone with much more power than she has, namely her controlling, obsessive millionaire boyfriend, who views her as a possession. This is more of a realistic horror familiar to women on Earth. She finds a way to escape and then fights for her freedom when it seems that maybe he's not gone after all. After his apparent death, she is made to feel crazy when she knows that he's still there. Being able to trust your instincts and find ways to fight back against nearly everyone in the film means that Cecilia Kass would be most useful as an ally.

  • The Thing (1982)

Of course, Kurt Russell's MacReady would probably be on anyone's list of people they would want as allies. In the second John Carpenter film on this list, he immediately sees the danger and doesn't hesitate to yell for the flamethrower. He insisted on the blood test to find out who was no longer human. When he realized that letting The Thing get to civilization would doom humanity, he knew what had to be done and that he wouldn't survive it. It didn't matter. There's also Childs, played by Keith David, who is every bit as tough and ready to fight as MacReady. Brilliant, capable, and brave people in horror are more common than people think.

  • The Terminator (1984)

There's more than one top pick for any survival team in James Cameron's "The Terminator." Of course, Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese is the survivor and fighter from the future, but over time Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor goes from a server with very little confidence to someone who can take the fight to a Terminator. Throughout the film series, especially in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah becomes as much of a fighter and a rebel leader as Kyle or the future version of her son, John Connor. I don't think that there's any question that any of us would want Sarah Connor keeping us safe.
