  • Audition (1999)

"Audition" is a classic that tends to scare people before they even watch it. This horror classic directed by Takashi Miike has an intimidating reputation and is as wild as the rest of Miike's filmography. The scariest thing about this film is the idea of what people, particularly people you don't usually see as dangerous, are capable of, but quite a few people haven't seen it.

  • Suspiria (1977)

Dario Argento is one of the acknowledged masters in the Giallo subgenre and has made celebrated supernatural films like "Suspiria." However, his most acclaimed and well know movies date back to the mid to late 1970s. Audiences tend to put off watching older films because they want to watch what is new, but Argento's films of this period are as gory and violent as current horror cinema and are just as inventive.

  • Hereditary (2018)

"Hereditary" was a career-making hit for director Ari Aster, but in this case, the film's stellar reputation and word of mouth might have worked against it with some fans. There's a phenomenon when people get tired of hearing how great a film is. It gets to a point where some fans won't give the movie a chance because they think there's no way a film can live up to the hype. For some people, that is why they haven't watched this film.

  • Rosemary's Baby (1968)

"Rosemary's Baby" is another film from another era that doesn't have the attention that current movies have. It is based on an Ira Levin novel and has terrific performances in a film where a woman feels like she's being plotted against while pregnant. Fans may think it might be dated, but it isn't other than the fashions in the film. It's also a good starter or a movie for fans who don't like outrageous amounts of violence or gore but still want something scary.

  • REC (2007)

This Spanish-found footage film was so good that it inspired an American remake. Co-directors Jaume Balaguerรณ and Paco Plaza created an atmosphere of terror you shouldn't miss even if you have seen the American version. The film spawned a franchise of "REC" films that are all interesting and did a great job with the format of found footage horror.

  • The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)

" The Human Centipede (First Sequence)" is just one of those films you must want to watch. It pushes the boundaries of good taste and how much the audience can take. Unsurprisingly, this body horror movie written and directed by Tom Six. is one that even hardcore horror fans will admit they haven't seen. Some claim that " The Human Centipede" films are movies that they will never watch.

  • Day of the Dead (1985)

It's hard to be the third movie in a groundbreaking trilogy. Coming in after two of the most revered films from director George Romero, "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead," "Day of the Dead" had a lot to live up to. Not as many fans have watched the third installment in the series, mainly because the focus has been on the first two films. "Day" was not as highly regarded as the first two as well, although the consensus on the film has dramatically improved in the last five years.

  • Poltergeist (1982)

Another very popular film of its time that fans admit that they haven't watched is "Poltergeist." This film from 1982, directed by genre legend Tobe Hooper, is a bit off the beaten path for the director. It is possible that the legend of his most well-known film, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," casts such a long shadow that people don't give his other films the credit they deserve.

  • The Omen (1976)

It's a shame that not as many fans have seen "The Omen." It's quite scary, surprisingly violent, and vicious, mainly because the director, Richard Donner, is best known for his more wholesome family films like "Superman" and "The Goonies." It's also an opportunity to see actors like Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, Billie Whitelaw, as the profoundly unnerving Mrs. Baylock, and David Warner go for the gusto. There's a certain death in the film that actively angered film reviewers at the time, so you know that it's got the goods.

  • Possum (2018)

"Possum" is an under-the-radar film that has gotten a lot of good word of mouth for being spooky. However, this film triggers people with a specific phobia, namely arachnophobia or fear of spiders. For people with a phobia, a movie that features the thing they are terrified of is one that they will actively avoid, and "Possum" is no exception. People afraid of spiders will even refuse to watch films as mild as "Arachnophobia" because their fear is so intense.

  • Martyrs (2008)

Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs" is another film with a fearsome reputation that scares off many potential viewers. Even just reading the film's summary is distressing, but the film puts the horror and the violence in your face so that you can't escape it. What makes it more difficult is that it's not just torture for shock value. It has a psychological component that explores the extreme emotional damage that childhood abuse can inflict on survivors and questions whether or not revenge is the answer.
