  • The First Omen - Aaron Morton

You may be familiar with cinematographer Aaron Morton's work from Fede รlvarez's Evil Dead. Morton has recently been on one hell of a streak in 2023, in particular. Aside from his nominated work on The First Omen, he also recently worked onย Abigail and Brian Duffield's No One Will Save You, both nominated in multiple categories this year.

  • I Saw the TV Glow - Eric K. Yue

Eric K. Yue has worked as a cinematographer on featuresย The Giant andย A Thousand And Oneย along with a music video for Father John Misty. Yue's collaboration with writer-directorJane Schoenbrun brought to life a neon-soaked nostalgia for a TV show we've never seen but knew in our bones all along.

  • In A Violent Nature - Pierce Derks

Due to a series of circumstances, In A Violent Nature needed to be reshot. Pierce Derks served as on-set documentarian on the initial shoot, and stepped into the cinematographer role for the reshoot. In an interview with Filmmaker, Derks discussed his new role and shooting the killer POV slasher on a $5,000 Canon C70.

  • Infinity Pool - Karim Hussain

DP Karim Hussain and Antiviral,ย Possessorย andย Infinity Poolย director Brandon Cronenberg have proven to be an unstoppable force. Hussain shared with Filmmaker that Infinity Pool was shot at 2K ProRes 4444 at 1280 ISO. "We did a lot of tests prior to shooting Possessor to find an image that, when blown up to 4K, would look the most like film and have that softness naturally right out of the gate."

  • Poor Things - Robbie Ryan

Another team of frequent collaborators on this year's list, Poor Things cinematographer Robbie Ryan, director Yorgos Lanthimos, and star Emma Stone. For this take on the Frankenstein story, Ryan explored new film stocks and techniques.

In aย Los Angeles Times interview, Ryan shared, "Yorgos really likes the Rainer Werner Fassbinder films where the dolly moves and it zooms in and out. That was the new hook for me. The troublesome part was that he wanted to achieve it with a very wide zoom going into a very tight zoom. We struggled with that, and we ended up with a lens that was 16.5 to 110. Worked out pretty well."

Congratulations to all of the incredible nominees, you can check out theย full list right here. Theย 2024 FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards polls are now open, you have until July 20th to make your voice heard! Follow along for more information on this yearโ€™s nominees and stay tuned for show details.
