There are many reasons to attend this year’s Overlook Film Festival (hitting New Orleans next month, get your badges here), from the world premiere of Radio Silence’s Abigail to a FANGORIA-sponsored 50th anniversary screening of Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise (with the legendary Paul Williams in attendance, no less) to an opening night screening of Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo … but now the fest has gone and added yet another reason to attend.
As pointed out by our friends over at Bloody Disgusting, this year’s iteration of the Overlook Film Festival will also play home to the world premiere of a brand-new 4K restoration of Lucio Fulci’s surrealist horror classic, The Beyond.
Says the Overlook Film Fest:
โLucio Fulci, the Giallo maestro himself, sets his sights on the bayou with his propulsive, brain-melting nightmare of psychedelia. Shot entirely in and around New Orleans, and driven by one of the all-time great Fabio Frizzi scores, Grindhouse Releasingโs brand new restoration is mandatory big-screen viewing.โ
Fulci’s The Beyond is, indeed, a brain-melting nightmare of a movie. The chance to see its 4K restoration on the big screen should have anyone who has previously only seen the film on a bootleg VHS or DVD positively salivating.
For anyone unfamiliar, The Beyond revolves around a woman who inherits a hotel in New Orleans (where the film was mostly shot, which makes it a perfect fit for the Overlook Film Festival) which may or may not be sitting atop a gate to Hell. It’s a deeply weird movie, one of Fulci’s best, and we’re thrilled to have a chance to check it out next month.
Speaking of which: The Overlook Film Festival runs from April 4th through the 7th. As mentioned up top, you can learn more or pick up your badge via the fest’s official homepage. See ya there?
