One of the best haunted house horror movies in recent memory is getting a sequel. Though the finer details remain elusive, filmmaking duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, of A Quiet Place fame, have revealed that a sequel to 2019’s Haunt is officially in the works. While there is no word on whether they will return to direct the follow-up, the important thing is that it does appear to be happening.
During a recent Reddit AMA, the duo made the reveal in honor of their new film 65, aka the one with Adam Driver and the dinosaurs. During the AMA, a fan asked about a possible Haunt sequel, at which point Beck and Woods decided to go the direct route rather than beat around the bush. “Thanks for the support. We can confirm that conversations for a Haunt sequel are officially underway. Happy (early) Halloween!!” they said. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide any further information at this time, so it’s unclear just how far along those conversations are.
Coming off the success of A Quiet Place, which Beck and Woods wrote, they decided to step behind the camera for Haunt, which was far smaller in scale. Released by Momentum Pictures, the film didn’t do a ton of damage at the box office, but it absolutely found its audience in the years since its release. So much so that it appears a sequel is in the cards. For those who might have missed it/need a refresher, the synopsis for the original film reads as follows.
“On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an ‘extreme’ haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some monsters are real.”
As for what the sequel could be about? There’s certainly a friendly premise there with the “extreme haunted house” concept that could be exploited in further installments. For what it’s worth, Beck and Woods addressed a possible sequel in 2020 speaking with Comicbook.com, with Beck saying the following about it:
“Part of that was just an instinctual thing where we feel like we played in a sandbox and then we want to move on to the next thing. But at the same time, certainly in the Haunt world, it’s a place where we have had conversations between ourselves, between our collaborators. What if there was an opportunity? This is what it might be. This is what it could look like. This is how we would want to shy away from convention, or this is a way we want to lean into convention, meaning that we have all these masked monsters, some of which did not make it through the first film, but you could create this version of the Wolfman, for instance. You could go on and create different types of villains.”
In short, it’s certainly something they’ve given some thought to. No word yet on whether or not any of the surviving cast members would return, but the concept could easily pave the way for an entirely new cast of characters. We’ll see how they decide to approach it.
