Dublin-based director Paul Duane’s debut feature All You Need is Death has been high on our hotly-anticipated list since we bought you an exclusive poster last year – and today’s brand new trailer will put the eerie Irish folk horror on the top of your list too.
Debuted exclusively on IndieWire today via XYZ Films, the trailer for All You Need is Death promises tons of atmosphere, ominous body horror and a generous amount of blood. Starring Charlie Maher (Blue Lights), Simone Collins (The Last Duel) and Olwen Fouéré (Mandy, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the film follows:
A young couple, who are a part of a mysterious, secret organization, travel at night with the desire to discover forbidden knowledge. They believe that living, modern alchemy is contained in old, forgotten songs. When they find an elderly, mysterious woman who sings songs that have never been heard before, they open the door to an ancient evil and madness.
In an interview with Film in Dublin, Duane expanded on the tone that fans can expect from All You Need is Death:
I’m a huge fan of films that privilege atmosphere over plot. I’m less interested in films that are scare machines, that are there to make you jump every five minutes, so people who go to the film expecting a lot of jump scares and gore are going to be disappointed. What it does, I think, and what people seem to enjoy from the feedback we’re getting is that it’s tremendously creepy, atmospheric, mysterious. All You Need Is Death puts you into a very unfamiliar world, it’s much more a cosmic horror vibe of creepiness, it’s more about getting under your skin than it is about jump scares or gore.
Films that influenced Duane when creating his first horror include Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure, Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession and David Cronenberg’s Scanners – so that should give you some idea of what kind of nebulous nightmares you’re in for.
All You Need Is Death premieres April 11 in select theaters from XYZ Films and VOD – and here’s that brand new terrifying trailer:
