It’s been a while since we heard anything on Apple TV+’s long-gestating Godzilla series, but today brings us a boatload of new information: an extensive plot synopsis; a handful of new images; and, last but certainly not least, an official title. Let’s dig in!

For starters, the show’s called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and will be set within the same universe as Legendary’s Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and the forthcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Co-developed by Chris Black and award-winning comic book legend Matt Fraction, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ first two episodes are directed by WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman.

Here’s what it’s about:

“Spanning three generations, the series following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and tracks two siblings following in their fatherโ€™s footsteps to uncover their familyโ€™s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows.”

We did not expect Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to tell a generational story, but what an interesting idea! And doubly so when you’ve got Kurt Russell playing the older version of Wyatt Russell’s character. That’s just good, ol’ fashioned fun casting. Speaking of which, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will also feature performances from Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Strong cast!

Finally, we’ve got a quartet of new images to share. First up, Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw…

…and the younger Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell:

Next up: Anna Sawai, casting her eyes upwards (almost definitely towards Godzilla):

And speaking of which, here’s a fresh look at that aforementioned bad boy:

As of this writing, Apple TV+ has not announced a release date for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, but we imagine that information will be along (probably attached to the show’s first trailer) sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for that, Godzilla fans!
