IFC Films and Shudder have acquired North American rights to action-horror Azrael from director E.L. Katz (Channel Zero, The Haunting of Bly Manor), with Deadline reporting today that the Samara Weaving-starring film will release exclusively in theaters via IFC on September 27.
Following the theatrical release, Azrael will make its debut on Shudder streamer later this year.
Alongside Weaving, Azrael also stars Femme and Candyman‘s Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Katariina Unt.
Written by Simon Barrett (The Guest, You’re Next), Azrael :
[…] takes place in a world in which no one speaks, watching as a a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness — but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival.
Deadline further report that Azrael is produced by Dan Kagan (Longlegs, Significant Other), Dave Caplan (Longlegs, Babylon) and Barrett.
Here’s what Katz had to say about the acquisition:
I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Azrael released by our good friends at Shudder/IFC. Their support of wild, uncompromising genre films is unparalleled. We are so excited to invite all horror fans along for this mysterious, gruesome, hellish, Samara Weaving ass kicking marathon.
Following its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year, Azrael will also play at Fantasia Film Festival and London’s FrightFest next month.
Keep your eyes peeled for Azrael playing near you this fall, and we’ll bring you any further updates as they roll in.
