A24 have today revealed the first look at Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster‘s highly anticipated next project Beau is Afraid.
Originally titled Disappointment Blvd., Beau is Afraid has been described as ‘an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most succesful entrepeneurs of all time.’
The poster, tweeted out by A24 earlier today, shows a young boy in a set of grey silk pyjamas, extremely similiar to the ones that Beau is Afraid star Joaquin Phoenix was spotted wearing on set last year.
Alongside Phoenix, Beau is Afraid stars Parker Posey (Lost in Space), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune) , Hayley Squires (In the Earth), Denis Mรฉnochet (Inglorious Basterds), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark) and Zoe Lister Jones (director of The Craft: Legacy). A24 will produce and finance the film as they have with Aster’s other two features.
Aster hit the horror scene hard with 2017’s Hereditary, lauded by many as the scariest film of the year. With 2019’s trippy folk horror Midsommar, he cemented himself as one of the most exciting new directors in the game garnering praise from Martin Scorsese himself. Before that however, in 2011 he directed a horror-comedy short titled Beau, which follows one man’s attempt to leave his apartment after the keys are taken from the door, and the gradual descent into madness that follows. Although no link between the short and upcoming feature has been confirmed, Aster himself has teased that his next film would be a‘nightmare comedy’.
While A24 have revealed Beau is Afraid will be released next year, no further details are known. While you wait to find out what exactly Beau is afraid of, check out the full vaguely unsettling poster below:
