In a new interview with Variety, legendary actor and living meme Willem Dafoe shares some intel on the character he’ll be playing in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, which lands in theaters next September.
Here’s the full quote:
“I havenโt seen any footage yet, but it was fun to do. I play a police officer in the afterlife, so Iโm a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and thatโs what sent me to the other side. But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So thatโs my job. But itโs colored by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B-movie action star.”ย
Based on the above (and a few other random things we’ve heard), it sounds like Beetlejuice 2 won’t be skimping on the sort of wacky characters that populated the original film’s version of the afterlife. In Beetlejuice, we met a dead high school football team, a cryptic janitor, a bureaucratic office worker who just couldn’t give up smoking, and more. Those characters went a long way towards selling Burton’s bizarro vision, and it’s fun to hear we’ll be getting a new round of ’em in Beetlejuice 2.
As previously reported, Beetlejuice 2 also stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Justin Theroux. The exact plotline remains shrouded in mystery, but we’re very curious to find out what this long-delayed sequel came up with in terms of a narrative. Fingers crossed that Burton and company can make lightning strike twice.
Stay tuned for more on Beetlejuice 2 as further updates become available.
