After a number of false starts and a strike-related delay or two, Tim Burton took to Instagram this morning to announce something many of us thought we’d never live to see: filming has officially wrapped on Beetlejuice 2. It’s done, they made it, and we’re all gonna get to see it next September. Whether or not this long-awaited sequel will live up to the original remains to be seen, but if nothing else – it’s completed and en route.

Burton’s post was accompanied by the image at the top of this page, which shows the director sitting on one of Beetlejuice 2‘s sets, one which will be immediately familiar to anyone who’s seen Burton’s 1988 original.

We don’t know much about Beetlejuice 2 (though we can say with certainty that it won’t be Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, another iteration of this sequel that almost got made once upon a time), but the few things we do know are intriguing: for one thing, Beetlejuice will have a wife, played by Monica Bellucci. We also know that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz, and that Willem Dafoe is playing a former B-movie action star who’s now working as a detective in the afterlife. How any of this fits together is anyone’s guess, but we’re admittedly very curious to find out.

In addition to the names mentioned above, Beetlejuice 2 will also star Catherine O’Hara and Justin Theroux. As of this writing, the film is due to arrive in theaters on September 6th of next year. Gonna be a long wait on this one, in other words, but don’t worry: we’ll keep you informed with further updates as they roll in between now and then. Stay tuned, folks.
