Crawl -ย Pluto TV and Paramount+
Alexandre Aja (High Tension) creates a whole new tension as a young woman and her father face off against alligators on the loose in Crawl. The stakes are high and the fun is through the roof as our protagonists make their way through murky flood waters absolutely teaming with gators!
Looking for more alligator horror? We've got you covered.
It Follows - Hulu
Hulu just added It Follows to their streaming library and we'll take any excuse to sing this one's praises. Sebastien Vanicek, director of the new French spider horror movie Infested listed this as one of his favorite horror movies, and we'd have to agree. It's easily in the top 10 best horror movies made in the last decade.
A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.
There's anย It Follows sequel currently in the works so it's a good time to get reacquainted with the original. Plus,ย It Follows star Maika Monroe is gracing the big screen in the upcoming Longlegs so it's also an excellent time to revisit one of her earlier roles.
Birth/Rebirth - Hulu
I am once again here to say that Laura Moss'ย Birth/Rebirth is criminally underseen. It's aย fantastic updated twist onย Frankenstein lore and an exploration of a motherโs love. A morgue technician (Marin Ireland) successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. When the girlโs mother (Judy Reyes), discovers her baby alive, they enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return.
It's now streaming on Hulu, so let's right this wrong!
Blood and Black Laceย - Shudder
Mario Bava's 1964 giallo ranks high on my "most gorgeous opening credits of all time" list. "A masked, shadowy killer brutally murders the models of a scandalous fashion house in Rome."
Fashion! Murder! Italy! And, yes... black gloves.
Stopmotion - Shudder
If you are even remotely interested in stop-motion animation or have any sort of fascination/curiosity with "the process" behind any art form, I think you'll enjoy this.
Stopmotionย is award-winning director Robert Morganโs live-action feature debut. The horror movie traces the path of a stop-motion animator who begins a new, rather startling puppet project, where the characters in her film take on a real-world life of their own.
For more, read our interview between the stop-motion legend Phil Tippett (Mad God) and Morgan.
Pretty Little Liars Summer School - Max
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin returned last month for a second season! This time, we're headed to Summer School, where our five final girls are being stalked yet again. Horror fans will find this series rife with Easter eggs and tidbits of horror trivia that I hope potentially serve to usher in new fans to the genre.
Horror royalty Annabeth Gish is a series regular, which should be reason enough to tune in. Genre die-hards will find lots to appreciate, and newcomers will find lots to explore. Season 1 was a straight-up slasher; this time, we've got a slasher on the loose with just a hint at the possibility of supernatural elements at play. Whether that's true, we'll have to wait and find out when Pretty Little Liars: Summer School premiered on Max May 9, you have time to catch up before the finale!
Stay tuned for our interview with the cast and series creatorsย Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring.
ย
Universal Monsters channel - Pluto TV
If you happen to follow me on any social media platform, then you've likely heard me going on about the Universal Monsters Channel on Pluto TV. I usually have it playing in my office as a sort of constant companion. You'll find familiar favorites likeย Frankenstein and Dracula streaming all day long, for free. Pretty much any horror movie distributed by Universal Pictures is fair game, so (the first time) I sat writing this up, Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairsย was playing. Right now, it'sย Tremors II.
Pluto has a few other streaming channels dedicated to horror, we run an ongoing Tuesday night triple feature, affectionately dubbed "Terror Tuesdays." Three horror movies every Tuesday evening curated by Fango, streaming on the Terror channel, for free! Join the party next time.
Event Horizon - Paramount+
Event Horizon is making its rounds, landing on Paramount+ this month. The premise is simple: "A rescue crew is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that had been lost for seven years." Sounds like pretty standard fare, but this one veers off the familiar path in a very fun way.
Two summers ago, Scott Wampler revisited Event Horizon in honor of its 25th anniversary and had this to say: "I was struck by how purely Late โ90s this thing is. Everything about it has that glossy sheen that dominated mid-budget genre efforts throughout that decade, and in most cases that sheen would drive me nuts. I lived through that era and do not remember most of those films warmly.
I was therefore surprised to realize thatย Event Horizonโs in-your-face โ90s-ness now feels more like a pleasant nostalgia bath than everything else. These actors, these sets, these camera angles all took me back to a time where I was sneaking into movies with my buddies, smoking cigarettes in the parking lot, and generally just being a punk-ass kid with a growing interest in film."
ย
I Know What You Did Last Summer - Paramount+
This '90s banger was penned by Scream's Kevin Williamson and stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe as "Four young friends bound by a tragic accident are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town."
Freddie Prinze Jr. only recently watched this for the first time, and stopped in to chat with us about it and other fun horror things.
The Nun - Tubi
If you're not subscribed to a single streaming platform, you could still remain pretty well fed on horror fare with these free streaming apps.ย The Nunย has landed on Tubi. Fango friend Bonnie Aarons birthed an absolute horror icon with this character, look around any convention floor or around any neighborhood on Halloween nightย and you'll spot no less than a dozen of her likeness within a stone's throw.
The demon nun Valak first appeared inย The Conjuring 2ย before going on to become the title character inย The Nunย and the 2023 sequel,ย The Nun II.
They Live - Starz
I briefly entertained the idea of going into advertising, and then I saw They Live and it messed me up real good. Thank you, Mr. Carpenter! This John Carpenter classic stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster chewing bubble gum and kicking ass. But what happens when you run out of bubble gum? Oh, you'll see.
"They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live."
The Devil's Bath - Shudder
This German horror film takes place in 1750 Austria and centers on a deeply religious woman named Agnes who has just married her beloved. Her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations.
Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison. Giving a voice to the invisible and unheard women of the rural past, The Devilโs Bath is based on historical court records about a shocking, hitherto unexplored chapter of European history.
Streaming on Shudder June 28.
The Conjuring - Netflix
Netflix doesn't add a ton of new horror monthly, but they've built up a pretty decent library. This month, threeย Conjuring movies are joining the party. Back in April, the news dropped that James Wan's Conjuring universe would be expanding with a new series coming to Max in the near future, so it's a good time to revisit the series from the inception. You can watch The Conjuring,ย The Conjuring 2, andย The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It on Netflix.
Frogman - Screambox
You know we love a good old-fashioned creature feature that goes heavy on creature design and practical FX.ย Frogmanย certainly fits the bill. According to director and co-writer Anthony Cousins, Frogman is based on an actual cryptid legend out of Loveland, Ohio with sightings dating back as far as 1955 of a four-footย bipedal frog-like creature with a magic wand.
Take an in-depth look behind the scenes of Frogman's FX, and stream the movie on Screambox.
Evil Deadย (2013) - Max
We never need a reason to revisit Fede รlvarez's Evil Dead (2013), but if we did, Fede at the helm of the upcomingย Alien: Romulus would be a pretty solid argument for a rewatch. As we wait for ourย Evil Dead SteelBook pre-orders to ship from Shout Factory, we'll be streaming it on loop, thanks to Max.
In the meantime, check out our many reasons Fede is the perfect director forย Alien: Romulus.
Silent Hill - Hulu
With all the newย Silent Hill announcements dropping like hotcakes at the end of May, we're in the mood to brave the fog and revisit our 2006 Pyramid Head and Dark Nurses. Brandon Trush calls this "a beacon for what future horror game adaptations should strive to be" in his argument for whyย Silent Hill is the best film adaptation of a horror game. Would you agree?
Godzillapalooza - Prime
Prime just added so many Godzilla movies. I don't know ifย Godzilla vs. Spacegodzillaย ranks very high on fans' lists, but it's definitely got my attention. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla,ย Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.ย and a bunch more are landing on the platform this month. So if you're looking to enjoy a Godzilla marathon, you're in luck. Binge Godzilla movies on Prime, then make your way over to Netflix for the mega-hit Godzilla Minus One.
ย
Godzilla Minus Oneย - Netflix
By all accounts, Godzilla Minus Oneย was one of the biggest movies to grace our screens last year and watching the journey from the box office to the Oscars and beyond was a high point for many of us. Godzilla Minus Oneย ย is now streaming on Netflix, so you can relive the cinematic magic, or experience it at home for the first time. Check out our interview with director Takashi Yamazaki on how he approached making Godzilla scary again.
Anna and the Apocalypseย - Peacock
Every year, I am baffled as to why this brilliant horror-comedy zombie musical does not have a more rabid following. This means I'm ecstatic to show it some love outside of the holiday season to get a jump on this year's "Anna and the Apocalypse is Awesome" campaign.
It's picked up steam in recent years, but inexplicably does not seem to have taken its rightful place among holiday horror giants as a household seasonal staple. It deserves to be. If you've been putting this one off,ย sit down with it this month, when there aren't dozens of other holiday horrors competing for your love. It's heartfelt and clever and likely the only place you'll encounter a festive snowman zombie as Anna and her friends fight, slash, and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones.
And if you need more convincing, this is an actual line from arguably the catchiest tune in a solid lineup of bangers, "When it comes to killin' zombies, I'm the top of my class. While you've been hidin', I've been kickin' some ass.โ
Ghostbusters + Ghostbusters II - Peacock
June marks the fortieth anniversary ofย Ghostbusters, a formative horror comedy for most of us. They came, they saw, they kicked our asses. In the best way possible. Peacock has bothย Ghostbusters andย Ghostbusters II now streaming, so you can make it a proper party with a double-feature. We're fresh out of Ecto Cooler, but we'll manage somehow.
Check out Ghostbusters on the cover of FANGORIA #36 and Ghostbusters II on the cover of FANGORIA #84 in the archives.
Labyrinth andย The Dark Crystal - Peacock, Tubi, Pluto TV
Speaking of formative double features, Peacock, Tubi, and Pluto TV are hitting us with a double whammy of weird '80s goodness. Labyrinth andย The Dark Crystal were some truly dark gems from the Jim Henson team,ย both of which are wildly solid entries in the realm of "gateway horror." I personally rewatchย Labyrinth probably several times a month, but it's been a bit since I've seenย The Dark Crystal, so I foresee a sweet double feature in my near future.
If the kids are home for summer break, these are two entries on the list you can watch as a family. Results may vary, proceed with caution. Showing these movies to impressionable young minds may cause them to grow up and work for a horror magazine or something of that nature.
All The New Horror Movies Streaming In June
Check out the full FANGORIA streaming guide below for all the new horror movies being added to Prime, Peacock, Paramount+, Shudder, Netflix, Arrow, Max, Hulu, Screambox,ย plus free horror movies streaming on PlutoTV, Tubi, and more this month.
