2018’s Bird Box was a bonafide Netflix smash, triumphantly going viral, becoming the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of its release (until being dethroned in 2021) and even spawning its very own challenge. It makes perfect sense then that we’re getting a sequel to Susanne Bier’s Sandra Bullock-starring post-apocalyptic horror – albeit a little later than we might have expected.
Netflix have today announced that Bird Box Barcelona, written and directed by The Occupantย andย The Headย filmmakersย Alexย and David Pastor, will premiere on July 14.
The sequel, set in – you guessed it – Barcelona, will explore the ‘outbreak’ from the first movie that left society in smouldering ruins:
โAfter a mysterious force decimates the worldโs population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.โ
Bird Box Barcelona stars Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell, as well as Mario Casas Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro with Lola Dueรฑas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jennerย andย Leonardo Sbaraglia.
Bird Box producers Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan will return, alongside Adriรกn Guerra and Nรบria Valls for Nostromo Pictures. Executive producers are Susanne Bier, Josh Malerman, Ryan Lewis, Ainsley Davies for Chris Morgan Productions and Brian Williams for Dylan Clark Productions.
Here’s the latest trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, and from the looks of it, you’re going to want to invest in a good blindfold:
