Headed to this year’s SXSW Film Festival is Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s Birdeater, which won the Audience Award for Best Australian Narrative Feature at this year’s Sydney Film Festival. It’s Clark and Weir’s feature debut, and judging by the amount of buzz surrounding the film, they’ve got something special on their hands.

Today brings us Birdeater‘s first teaser trailer. We’ll get to that in just a moment, but first – here’s an official plot synopsis:

“A bride-to-be is invited to join her own fiancรฉโ€™s bachelor party onย a remote property in the Australian outback. But as the festivitiesย spiral into beer-soaked chaos, uncomfortable detailsย about theirย relationship are exposed, and the celebration soon becomes aย feral nightmare.”

Yikes. Inviting your bride-to-be to your bachelor party is never a good idea, but it sounds like it will turn out to be a particularly bad call for the characters in Birdeater.

Now. Let’s take a look at that trailer…

There’s very little to go on here, obviously (which tracks, given that the teaser’s just over half a minute long), but it’s enough to sell what feels like a very sinister and ominous tone. There’s no telling how this particular mine cart might end up flying off the tracks, but we’re guessing that things are gonna get bloody before they get better.

Birdeater stars Shabana Azeez, Mackenzie Fearnley, Ben Hunter, Jack Bannister,ย Clementine Anderson, Alfie Gledhill, Harley Wilson, and Caroline McQuade. Clark and Weir are co-directing a screenplay written by Clark.

Nothing further to report on Birdeater at this time, but we imagine we’ll all be hearing a lot more about Clark and Weir’s film after it screens at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, which kicks off later this week in Austin, TX. Stay tuned!
