MGM has released the first trailer for Blink Twice, which serves as the feature directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz. This one has been of interest for some time. Not only because Kravitz, known for her roles in movies like The Batman and Mad Max: Fury Road, is stepping behind the camera, but because it was originally going under the rather intriguing title of Pussy Island. Presumably for marketing reasons, the powers that be decided to change the title. In any event, we finally have some sense of what Kravitz cooked up, and it looks pretty wild. Have a look.
The trailer sees Channing Tatum playing a billionaire tech bro who is, at least at first, his usual charming self. He then invites a pair of unsuspecting women to his private island along with some friends for a bit of fun. It all does seem fun at first, but then a strange air creeps in. People start forgetting things, other people start disappearing. It all devolves from there before lots of blood is spilled and a deadly mystery looms in the background. Admittedly, the trailer seems to be hiding a lot as there are evidently going to be some reveals along the way. It does appear to be a wild ride though, that much is clear.
Kravitz has assembled a pretty impressive ensemble for her debut. Aside from Tatum, the cast includes Naomi Ackie (Master of None), Christian Slater (Interview with the Vampire), Simon Rex (Down Low), Adria Arjona (Morbius), Kyle MacLachlan (Fallout), Geena Davis (Beetlejuice) and Alia Shawkat (Green Room). The official synopsis reads as follows:
“When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.”
The film will be hitting theaters in late August where it will, admittedly, have some competition. The week prior, the much-anticipated Alien: Romulus arrives. The same weekend, Kravitz’s debut will be going up against The Crow remake, with Sony’s Marvel Comics adaptation Kraven the Hunter on deck the following weekend. Come what may, we’ll be ending the summer movie season with some horror, that’s for sure.
Kravitz penned the screenplay with E.T. Feigenbaum. Bruce Cohen, Tiffany Persons, Garret Levitz, Kravitz and Tatum serve as producers, with Stacy Perskie, Jordan Harkins and Vania Schlogel serving as executive producers.
Blink Twice is set to hit theaters on August 23.
