If you’ve been looking to spice up your upcoming Halloween festivities, look no further: A24’s smart and savage Gen Z slasher is headed to Blu-ray and DVD for October 18th, just in time for spooky season. Grab your glowsticks, slap on that Charli XCX playlist and get ready to play Bodies Bodies Bodies.
The black comedy is the latest in a string of solid A24 horror releases this year (including Ti West’s X, its prequel Pearl and Alex Garland’s Men), and has been described by the infamous distribution company as what happens when “a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion – a party game goes awry in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong.”
Originally set to be directed by Watcher director Chloe Okuno, the feisty whodunnit is the English directorial debut of Halina Reijin (Instinct) and has been solidly received over the summer, racking up $10 million at the box office. Bodies Bodies Bodies stars an ensemble cast of Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Movie Film), Amandla Stenberg (Dear Evan Hansen), Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby), Myha’la Herrold (Plan B) and Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy).
When interviewed by FANGORIA at SXSW, the cast expressed their feelings about making moves in the horror genre – many of them for the first time. Maria Bakalova praised fellow A24 offerings Hereditary and Midsommar, Chase Sui Wonders (Daniel Isn’t Real) shared what horror remake had her sleepless for two weeks, and Lee Pace confessed his love for a “smart, cheap horror movie” (us too, Lee).
Combine a killer cast with smart laughs, social commentary, and twists aplenty, and it’s no surprise that Bodies Bodies Bodies has been a hit, garnering positive buzz in North America and now (finally!) in the UK too. While there is no definitive date yet for Bodies Bodies Bodies’ streaming release, keep your eyes peeled.
