The trailer hashes out the familiar beats of the story as many of us know it, mostly from Disney’s animated classic (or its live-action remake). The ball, the fairy godmother, the evil step-sisters, the glass slipper. It’s all there! But once we get past the familiar, things get bloody and twisted. Cinderella is gifted a powerful mask by her fairy godmother, which grants her the power to kill those who wronged her. It essentially then turns into a slasher film, with Cinderella taking on that role. The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters and stepmother push her too far, leading her to swap her glass slippers in pursuit of blood-soaked vengeance with the help of her Fairy Godmother.”

Andy Edwards directed the adaptation, with Mark L. Lester and Jessica Mathis on board as producers. The cast includes Lauren Staerck, Natasha Henstridge, Stephanie Lodge, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis and Darrell Griggs. Amazingly, this is just one of two horror movies based on Cinderella coming our way this year. We also have Cinderella’s Curse, which is also going to be released in theaters at some point this year.

This comes about in the aftermath of last year’s sensation Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. That movie also has a sequel coming out later this year. It’s all part of a new wave of slasher films based on childhood favorites that are in the public domain. There are also twisted versions of Peter Pan and even Steamboat Willie in the works as well. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly recently, director Andy Edwards explained how he was going to twist the tale of Cinderella into an R-rated horror flick.

“We have Cinderella, we have the evil stepmother, we have the two evil sisters, and they treat her pretty badly. But there’s a few twists in it and a few surprises. There’s sex and violence, as well, which you might not expect. So something for everyone!”

Cinderella’s Revenge hits theaters on April 26.
