BARBARIAN (2022)

I’ll tell you one thing I’m sick to death of hearing about: Zach Cregger’s Barbarian.

“It’s awesome,” say the people I know who’ve seen it. “You, specifically, are going to go apeshit for this movie,” say others. “What sort of maroon hasn’t caught an early screening of Barbarian yet?” shriek the masses. These targeted harassment campaigns have become overwhelming, and while I’ll finally get my chance to catch Cregger’s film in a theater next weekend, I do not appreciate them releasing this excellent new poster (via the good folks at Bloody Disgusting) to further stoke my hype levels.

How’s that for an excellent piece of work? Original movie poster art has long since fallen to the dreaded “Photoshopped collage of heads” format, and it’s always good fun to see a film go the extra mile for the folks who like something with a bit more personality. That it’s attached to what I hear is one helluva fun horror movie only serves to sweeten the deal.

For those unfamiliar with Barbarian, here’s an official plot synopsis:

A young woman discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

My understanding is that this synopsis is hiding a number of secrets, and that the right way to go into Barbarian is as uninformed as humanly possible. I’ve protected myself from any spoilers thus far, but will I make it to next Saturday with my innocence intact? Probably not, now that I’ve put that thought down in print for anyone to see.

Zach Cregger’s Barbarian, starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgรฅrd, Justin Long and Richard Brake, hits theaters on September 9th.
