A legendary filmmaker is getting the documentary treatment. Shudder has released a brand new trailer for Dario Argento Panico. Directed by Simone Scafidi, the film takes an in-depth look at one of horror’s most celebrated figures. The man behind classics such as Suspiria and Deep Red is celebrated by fellow directors, with plenty of behind-the-scenes footage showcasing the man at work. Check it out.
The majority of the trailer is folks talking up Argento but the real juice is some of the archival footage being used here. Not only is Argento himself taking part in the film, but an impressive list of interviewees includes Asia Argento, Fiore Argento, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gaspar Noè, Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Savia and Lamberto Bava. Shudder only recently acquired the film and they are clearly excited about it as you’ll be able to stream it next month. The official synopsis reads as follows:
“In the secluded ambiance of hotel rooms, Dario Argento crafted his greatest cinematic creations, seeking solace from the outside world to delve into his nightmares. Now, he finds himself in a hotel room to return to the very setting that ignited his creative fervor to conclude his latest script and participate in an intimate interview, all while being followed by a film crew documenting his life for a movie about his illustrious career.”
To commemorate the release of the film, Shudder and the IFC Center will present Panic Attack: The Films of Dario Argento. The series of films celebrates the works of the Giallo horror maestro, revealing his profound impact on horror and his lasting influence on cinema. The series runs January 31 through February 8 at the IFC Center and will include Suspiria (1977), Opera (1987), Deep Red (1975), Dario Argento Panico (2024), The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971), Dracula 3D (2013), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Vortex (2021) and Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1982). Shudder’s VP of Programming, Sam Zimmerman previously had this to say about the film:
“Following our release of Dark Glasses, Shudder is once again privileged to partner with icon of the genre, Dario Argento. To call Mr. Argento influential would understate it. His pioneering work in horror and giallo is as indelible as it is frightening, creating images that live forever in the eyes and minds of audiences and artists across the globe. Panico digs deep to craft an intimate portrait of the master, eye-opening to admirers and newcomers alike.”
Dario Argento Panico begins streaming on Shudder on February 2.
