Back in 2021, word circulated that Mike Flanagan (the filmmaker behind Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Game, and Midnight Mass) would soon be tackling an adaptation of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s 2019 comic book series, Something Is Killing The Children for that same streaming giant. You might also recall that Flanagan and Netflix parted ways in the back half of last year, rendering Flanagan’s involvement with that fledgling show a moot point.
Well, good news for Something Is Killing The Children fans: the project lives on, and — according to a surprising new report over at Deadline — it’s now being shepherded onto screens by Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese (whose latest Netflix series, 1899, was recently denied a second season by Netflix). Interesting!
Deadline describes Something Is Killing The Children thusly:
“When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories—impossible stories of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows. Their only hope of finding and eliminating the threat is the arrival of a mysterious stranger, one who believes the children and claims to see what they can see. Her name is Erica Slaughter. She kills monsters.“
That certainly sounds like a great fit for bo Odar and Friese, whose genre talents are more than established at this point. Yeah, sure, maybe 1899 didn’t get a second at-bat, but Dark was wall-to-wall gold, and it’s honestly kinda nice to see that everyone involved in the above deal is still willing to work together. We think they’ll knock this one outta the park, and look forward to seeing what they do with it!
