It’s been over a decade since Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan hit theaters, and that sexy, sinister horror film remains Aronofsky’s highest-grossing film to date. Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t appear to be done with it quite yet!

In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, the director expresses his interest in directing a movie musical (“Figuring that angle of it, of what the music would be, where it comes from, is the big challengeโ€), and also casually mentions that he’s “trying to do” a Black Swan stage musical. Asked whether he’d be aiming to situate that production on Broadway, Aronofsky says: “We’ll see what happens. But we’re working on it.”

This is an intriguing development! You will of course remember that Black Swan revolved around a ballet dancer (Natalie Portman) whose company is rolling out a brand-new production of Swan Lake. The pressures of the job begin to get to her, and things get really weird after Portman’s character has a dalliance with a fellow dancer (played by Mila Kunis). One thing leads to another, and the film ultimately arrives at a shocking, bloody conclusion. One can easily imagine this making for a helluva live show.

Obviously, there’s nothing further to report at this time (and there might be nothing to report for a while), but if you’re looking for an Aronofsky fix, you can always catch the Brandon Fraser-starring The Whale when it hits theaters next week. Stay tuned for further updates on the Black Swan musical as they roll in.
