Not too long ago, we learned that Bryan Taylor (one half of the insane directorial duo that brought us Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage) would soon be breaking ground a new Hellboy movie, to be titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man. With a script co-written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and best-selling author Christopher Golden, the sequel would find Big Red encountering a coven of witches while stranded in the Appalachian mountains.

This sounded all well and good to us, but one big question dangled over the entire story: Who’s gonna play Hellboy? Ron Perlman put his stamp on the character via two excellent Guillermo del Toro films, while a more recent effort from Neil Marshall cast Violent Night‘s David Harbour in the role. It seemed unlikely that Harbour would return for The Crooked Man but, hey, stranger things (no pun intended) have happened.

Well, today we’ve got an answer to that big, dangling question: according to Deadline Hollywood, Deadpool 2 and Baywatch star Jack Kesy (If you’re wondering, Jack Kesy played Black Tom in Deadpool 2, and you can see a photo of him – not in Deadpool 2, mind you – at the top of this page). The project is due to begin filming in April.

This is, admittedly, an outside-the-box choice for a new Hellboy movie, but Kesy does have the big-and-brawny thing down, and a brief look over his complete resume indicates that he’s got experience working under prosthetics. As long as he can convincingly hold a cigar and glower, sure, why not?

With this bit of casting out of the way, it’s likely that we’ll be hearing even more casting news in the week ahead, as Hellboy: The Crooked Man works its way through pre-production. Stay tuned for further updates on Taylor’s film as they roll in, everyone!
