More news from Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon today, as we learn that Edgar Wright (Last Night in Soho, the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy) is set to reboot Stephen King’s The Running Man, with Anyone But You star Glen Powell at the forefront.
Written by King in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Running Man was first adapted for the big screen in 1987 by Paul Michael Glaser, with action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead. Deadline reminds us that the story reads as follows:
King’s futuristic novel is a chase thriller set in a dystopian America in the year 2025. The story centers on Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show “The Running Man” in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. The show follows Richards being chased by numerous hunters, sent to kill him.”
As well as direct, Wright will co-write alongside Michael Bacall, and produce alongside Nira Park and Simon Kinberg, with George Linder set to exec produce.
According to a previous report at Deadline, Wright’s new vision will “be much more faithful to King’s bestselling novel.” If you want more of an insight into the novel, don’t forget to check out FANGORIA’s very own THE KINGCAST discuss it with the fellas of Radio Silence.
Details such as release date and further casting remain under wraps for now, but we’ll bring them to you as soon as we get them.
