DreamWorks Animation has revealed the first teaser trailer for Fright Krewe. The upcoming animated series hails from the minds of Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) and James Frey (American Gothic, I Am Number Four) and is due to arrive on not one, but two major streaming services just in time for the Halloween season. Indeed, you’ll be able to watch this one on both Hulu and Peacock. What viewers will be treated to, based on the trailer, is a mix of YA horror with a side of superhero storytelling. Check it out.
The trailer very much paints this as solid entry-level horror for younger viewers, while also looking to be perfectly enjoyable for older viewers as well. DreamWorks tends to do “animation for kids but also adults” quite well, though not typically in the horror space. The whole thing takes place in New Orleans and is set into motion when an accidental drop of blood unleashes an ancient evil. It then becomes a misfit group of kids who are gifted powers by ancient spirits against said ancient evil. The official synopsis for the series reads as follows:
“An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
This is far from the first time that Roth has dabbled in the world of television. He helped Netflix get into original programming a decade ago with Hemlock Grove, and more recently hosted AMC’s History of Horror. But animation is certainly less familiar territory for the seasoned filmmaker. He’s certainly staying busy, it seems, as he’s also got his long-awaited slasher Thanksgiving hitting theaters in November.
The core cast includes Sydney Mikayla as Soleil, Tim Johnson Jr. as Maybe, Grace Lu as Missy, Chester Rushing as Stanley, Terrence Little Gardenhigh as Pat and Jacques Colimon as Belial. Recurring members of the ensemble include Vanessa Hudgens as Madison, Josh Richards as Nelson, X Mayo as Alma, Rob Paulsen as Lou Garou and David Kaye as Mayor Furst, among many others.
Roth and Frey serve as creators and executive producers of the series, with Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco also on board as executive producers. Shane Acker and Mitchell Smith serve as co-executive producers. The first season will consist of ten episodes.
Fright Krewe arrives on Peacock and Hulu on October 2.
