Back to Georgetown? Linda Blair in THE EXORCIST (1973).

A Brand new Exorcist trilogy is coming, and no it’s not a remake! Universal and Peacock are reviving the franchise, in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. Here’s everything we know so far.

David Gordon Green is set to direct the Blumhouse-produced project which will star Academy-Awardยฎ Nominee Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night In Miami, Hamilton) and marks the return of Ellen Burstyn to The Exorcist universe. Burstyn was not involved in any of the subsequent movies in the franchise, and we are incredibly excited about her return. Scott Teems (Halloween Kills, The Quarry), Danny McBride (Halloween Kills, Halloween) and David Gordon Green teamed up for the story, which is being penned by Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds) and David Gordon Green.

Burstyn will be reprising her iconic Academy-Award nominated role as Chris MacNeil, a mother who survived the possession of her twelve-year-old daughter, Regan (Linda Blair) in the original movie (with the help of two priests who weren’t so lucky). The trilogy will be produced by Jason Blum on behalf of Blumhouse, David Robinson and James Robinson for Morgan Creek, David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Couper Samuelson will executive produce, with Ryan Turek overseeing the project for Blumhouse.

“There’s no better time to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the great team at Universal and finally getting to work with my friends at Blumhouse, than on this classic franchise, ” said David Robinson, Morgan Creek President. “David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Scott Teems and Peter Sattler have put together a compelling continuation of this iconic tale and I can’t wait to bring this to fans around the world.”

The trilogy will follow a flexible distribution model, which producer Jason Blum is excited about.

โ€œBlumhouse has always experienced incredible partnership from the team at Universal, and Iโ€™m grateful to Donna Langley and Jimmy Horowitz for believing in the vision of David’s film and having the foresight to be flexible with distribution, so the team feels top notch support through the lifeline of the film. They’re committed to theatrical exhibition and will also serving streaming viewers well by bringing an exciting franchise like the Exorcist to Peacock too,” said Jason Blum, CEO and Founder of Blumhouse. “I’m grateful to be working with David Robinson and the great team at Morgan Creek on this iconic franchise.”

How long do we have to wait for this MacNeil vs Satan showdown rematch? The first film in the trilogy will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023.
