EVIL

Fans of supernatural horror, particularly of the small screen variety, have reason to rejoice. Paramount+ has made it official, handing out a very early season 4 renewal to Evil. The third season premiered less than a month ago, but a mere four episodes into its run, the streaming service decided to keep the horror show going. The news was confirmed in an elegantly simple fashion on the showโ€™s social media channels.

This cements a pretty incredible turn of events for the show. Evil originally debuted on CBS as a traditional network series. And quite frankly, it was kind of cool that CBS was looking to boldly bring horror to network TV in 2019. Unfortunately, it didnโ€™t quite find an audience large enough to justify a continuation there. Luckily, Paramount+ needed content as it looked to compete with the likes of Netflix and others in the streaming game, providing a logical new destination for the series. Since the move, it has flourished and is one of the most-watched shows on the service. Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount+ Original Scripted Series, had this to say about the renewal:

โ€œEvil continues to expand its fanbase of both critics and viewers alike; season three currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it is a consistent top five most-watched original series and acquisition driver for the service. We couldnโ€™t be more excited to be terrified by what Robert and Michelle create for season four with our outstanding cast bringing it to life.โ€

The show is a psychological mystery that examines the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. The third season kicked off moments after the end of season two, following a newly ordained David and Kristen kiss. The two now have to navigate their new reality, but contend with Davidโ€™s involvement with โ€œthe entity,โ€ an espionage unit within the Catholic church. Meanwhile, Ben discovers that his brain is breaking from their unsolved cases and turns to his sister for help.

The cast for the show includes Katja Herbers (Westworld), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Aasif Mandvi (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Michael Emerson (Lost), Christine Lahti (The Blacklist), Kurt Fuller (Ghostbusters II), Andrea Martin (Black Christmas), Brooklyn Shuck (Rise), Skylar Gray (Room 104), Maddy Crocco and Dalya Knapp. Robert King, Michelle King, Liz Glotzer, Rockne S. Oโ€™Bannon and Nelson McCormick are on board as executive producers.

No word yet on how soon the brass at Paramount intends to get the gears turning on the next season. One expects that with the early renewal, they are already ahead of the game on that one, so we can likely expect to see season 4 arrive in 2023. More horror on TV is always a good thing, that much is certain.

The first four episodes of Evil season 3 are currently streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping on Sundays.
