The boogeyman, as a concept, has been around for a very large swatch of recorded human history. In some way, shape, or form, kids for generations have been scared of this mysterious, alleged entity that might be hiding under their bed, ready to get them at their most vulnerable. But what if the boogeyman was an honest-to-God, real thing that a town had to contend with? That is precisely what Boom! Studios is tackling with its upcoming comic book miniseries, Harrower – and we’ve got an exclusive little taste of what that’s going to look like.
The book comes from writer Justin Jordan (Spread, The Strange Talent of Luther Strode) and artist Brahm Revel (Guerillas), with Pat Brosseau (Hellboy: The Wolves of Saint August) serving as the book’s letterer. And today, here at Fango, we’ve got some preview art from the first issue of the four-issue series, including several variant covers. We’ve also got some interior preview pages that offer a tantalizing tease of the story at hand. Speaking of that, the synopsis for the series reads as follows:
“There’s nothing to fear in the quaint town of Barlowe, New Yorkโexcept, that is, for the Harrower. The children wish this boogeyman was just an urban legend, but this purveyor of puritanical vengeance against the unrighteous is very real, and there’s no escape, because the Harrower seems unkillable, and spans generations, always returningโฆ What secrets will Jessa Brink, a teenage girl obsessed with the Harrower, uncover, and will she be able to escape the pull of her morbid fixation?”
The book, in some ways, mirrors A Nightmare on Elm Street, with Freddy Krueger serving as the “boogeyman” of that particular story. But the evil force behind Harrower is a very different beast, which is even evident in these preview pages. In this case, we’re dealing with something a little more explicitly demonic in nature, with some heavy religious undertones at play. The book that readers will find on stands features main cover art by series artist Revel, and variant covers by acclaimed artists such as Erica Henderson (Creepshow), Michael Walsh (Carnage), and InHyuk Lee (Venom).
Harrower #1 hits shelves on February 8 at a comic book shop near you. It will also be available digitally through the Boom! Studios webstore, as well as digital retailers such as ComiXology, iBooks, Google Play and Kindle.
