The legendary David Cronenberg is due to return with his next project The Shrouds, with star Vincent Cassel (Irréversible, La Haine) revealing today that filming on the highly-anticipated feature has officially wrapped after filming started in Toronto in early May.
Deadline share further details about the plot (which sounds suitably grisly, and we would expect no less from the body horror master):
Cassel will play Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife. While he struggles to uncover a clear motive for the attack, the mystery of who wrought this havoc, and why, drive him to reevaluate his business, marriage and fidelity to his late wife’s memory, as well as push him to new beginnings. Sandrine Holt (Fear the Walking Dead) plays a mysterious woman, the wife of a billionaire, who contacts Cassel’s Karsh about a strange project involving her husband.
During a press conference at last year’s San Sebastian film festival, the Canadian horror icon described The Shrouds as “a very personal project for me”, as well as hinting that “people who know me will know parts of it are autobiographical.”
Alongside Cassel, The Shrouds stars Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Guy Pearce (Memento) and, as mentioned, Sandrine Holt. Deadline also let us know that Distribution is now being handled by SBS International, the sales arm of producer Saïd Ben Saïd (Elle), who is producing with Martin Katz for Prospero Pictures.
In his Instagram caption (seen below), Cassel thanks Cronenberg for his “trust and indissoluble elegance”, as well as teasing that he “Can’t wait for the world to see what we just did.” Neither can we, Vincent.
At the time of writing, The Shrouds doesn’t yet have a release date or trailer – but we will of course be bringing you all the updates as they roll in!
