First things first: if you’ve never seen Shin’ichirô Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead, you need to get on that immediately. A truly successful horror comedy that delights in pulling the rug out from under first time viewers, that 2017 insta-classic is mandatory viewing for anyone who counts themselves a fan of the zombie genre. We’ll do our best not to reveal that film’s secrets here, just for anyone who isn’t caught up.

And for the purposes of this post, not spoiling anything oughtta be fairly easy. We’re here today to check out the teaser trailer for Michel Hazanavicius’ Final Cut (revealed exclusively by our pals over at Bloody Disgusting earlier this morning), a French remake of One Cut of the Dead, and – very thankfully – it, too, plays the film’s cards close to the vest.

Let’s take a look…

As in One Cut of the Dead, Final Cut revolves around a scrappy independent film crew as they shoot their very own zombie movie. The production deals with the standard issues that arise on any indie production during filming, but then things go very awry, indeed. We’re not entirely sure if Final Cut will follow One Cut of the Dead‘s plot beat-for-beat, but what’s here looks very similar to the original: high energy, a somewhat goofy tone, and lots of blood.

Following a premiere at Cannes, Final Cut is slated to screen at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival (so, heads up if you’re attending). Starring Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Matilda Lutz and Finnegan Oldfield, Hazanavicius’ film will hit U.S. theaters on July 14th. Stay tuned for more – including what might end up being a more spoilery, full trailer – in between now and then!
