Today brings us the first trailer for Paul Owens’ Landlocked, a brand-new horror movie that blurs the line between that which is real and that which definitely isn’t. It’s Owens’ debut feature, it was clearly made on a very indie budget, it stars Owens’ real-life family members playing fictionalized versions of themselves … and it’s got one of the better hooks for a horror movie we’ve seen lately.
Let’s take a look:
Yes, the big hook on Landlocked is the incorporation of Owens’ actual childhood home movies (recorded on the same sorta ancient, shoulder-mounted VHS camera that appears in the film) into a wholly fictional – and, apparently, frightening – narrative. What a clever way to put those slowly deteriorating VHS tapes to good use!
In case the trailer wasn’t clear, here’s an official plot synopsis for the film, via Bloody Disgusting:
โSummoned to his soon-to-be demolished childhood home, Mason discovers an old VHS camera that can see into the past, driving him to record as many memories as possible before the doomed house is destroyed. Utilizing the directorโs own home movies, filming in the actual locations where he spent his youth and casting real-life family members to play fictionalized versions of themselves, Landlocked combines narrative and documentary with horror and sci-fi to create a movie unlike any otherโฆโ
This is exactly the sorta hustle we love to see here at FANGORIA, and we look forward to Landlocked‘s imminent arrival: the film will hit Digital, VOD and select theaters thanks to Dark Sky Films in just a matter of weeks – January 6th, to be precise. Stay tuned for further updates on Paul Owens’ Landlocked as they roll in.
