Given certain recent events, you may have spent some time thinking about the ocean lately – the dangers it poses, the hubris that can lead human beings to meet untimely ends within it. Things of that nature. None of this is new information, of course, but when an entire week’s news cycle is dominated by a frantic attempt to rescue some folks who rolled the dice on underwater exploration only to meet a very untimely end, well, it’s understandable that such things might’ve been on your mind as of late.

Well, earlier today the good folks at Collider debuted a trailer for a brand-new underwater thriller by the name of The Dive, and from where we’re standing it looks like director Maximilian Erlenwein (Stereo, Netflix’s Skylines) might be tapping into some of those same anxieties and fears.

The Dive comes to us from RLJE Films, who’ll release Erlenwein’s film in theaters this August. Here’s an official plot synopsis:

A deep-sea diving trip at one of the world’s most remote spots becomes a fight for survival for sisters Drew and May when a catastrophic landslide sends rocks tumbling into the sea. After being struck by the rockfall, May now lies 28 meters below the surface, trapped by debris and unable to move. With dangerously low levels of oxygen, it is up to Drew to fight for her sisterโ€™s life. She must put her own life in jeopardy and risk paying the ultimate sacrifice. But with no help in sight, time is quickly running outโ€ฆ

Erleinwein co-wrote The Dive‘s script with Joachim Hedรฉn, whose 2020 film Breaking Surface serves as the basis for Erlenwein’s film. That take on the material was apparently just a little bit different (in Hedรฉn’s version, the two divers – here played by Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause – are doing all this in frigid waters), but either way we’ve got the chills just thinking about this scenario.

The Dive hits theaters on August 25th. Stay tuned for further updates on this one as they become available and, in the meantime, maybe stay the hell out of the ocean. Seems dangerous down there.
