GEIGER #1

Image Comics is bringing yet another one of its genre titles to the small screen. As reported by Deadline, the best-selling comic Geiger from writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank has been scooped up by Paramount Television Studios. The studio fully plans to adapt it for TV, though the precise platform has yet to be determined, be it streaming on Paramount+ or a more traditional cable network. Either way, we’ve got some post-apocalyptic comic book goods coming our way.

Johns, known for his work in the world of DC Comics on titles like Flashpoint and movies like Aquaman, is set to write the pilot and serve as showrunner. Justin Simien (Bad Hair) is on board as an executive producer alongside Frank and Kyle Laursen. As for the story? It takes place decades in the future and centers on Tariq Geiger, who is merely trying to protect his family in the aftermath of nuclear war. The synopsis for the book reads as follows:

“Set in the years after a nuclear war ravaged the planet, desperate outlaws battle for survival in a world of radioactive chaos. Out past the poisoned wasteland lives a man even the Nightcrawlers and Organ People fear. Some call him Joe Glow, others call him the Meltdown Man. But his name…is Geiger.”

This marks a pretty quick turnaround from page to screen, as Geiger #1 was published in April 2021. But given the continued popularity of comic book-related media, coupled with a name like Johns, this move makes a lot of sense. Not to mention that Image also published The Walking Dead before that went on to become the biggest show on cable for several years, with a number of spin-offs currently in the works. So yeah, not hard to see why Paramount is going in on this one.

Not only that, but Geiger has done well enough that Johns and Frank recently collaborated on a spin-off series titled Junkyard Joe. That series has also sold well in the early running, and who knows? If things go well, Paramount could have a franchise on its hands. No need to get ahead of ourselves, though. For now, we can look forward to a post-apocalyptic show where Nightcrawlers and Organ People run amok. What’s not to like?

Geiger does not yet have a premiere date, but given that this is early days, that makes sense.
