Reece Shearsmith in IN THE EARTH.

Ben Wheatley’s In The Earth was a breakout favorite at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and recent news of its end-of-April release has just gotten even better: the film’s opening date (in theaters, according to the press release) has been moved up to April 16th.

Without giving too much away, Wheatley’s film, which stars Joel Fry, Ellora Torchia, Hayley Squires, and Reece Shearsmith in an iconic, unforgettable role, covers science fiction, folk horror, and survivalist/slasher territory, all while being a complete original. Set during a pandemic while also being filmed during one, In The Earth threatens to be the greatest of the inevitable Covid-era genre offerings headed our way.

If you want the official synopsis from NEON:

As the world searches for a cure to a disastrous virus, a scientist and park scout venture deep in the forest for a routine equipment run. Through the night, their journey becomes a terrifying voyage through the heart of darkness, the forest coming to life around them.

We’re always amped when Wheatley swerves into the horror lane; with In The Earth, he’s four-wheeling into new genre territory. See you on the 16th.
