  • The Blackening (2023)

This new film is not only a slasher where a masked killer challenges a friend group; it specifically confronts the horror movie tropes in cinema where the Black characters die first or preconceptions about Black characters. "The Blackening" was directed by Tim Story and stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji. The characters are literally in a cabin in the woods and must use their knowledge of horror movie rules to avoid being the next victim.

  • Wrong Turn (2003)

A group of friends has a flat tire, and a medical student in the woods finds them. People in horror movies never learn not to stay out of the woods. Their friends start to disappear, and a trio of cannibals is to blame. The friends fight to stay alive until only two are left. This film was directed by Rob Schmidt, and it stars Desmond Harrington, Eliza Dushku, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jeremy Sisto, and Kevin Zegers.

  • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

No discussion of this type of film would be complete without one of the most influential horror films of all time. "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" was directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Marilyn Burns, Gunnar Hansen, Teri McMinn, Paul Partain, Edwin Neal, and John Larroquette as the narrator can never be forgotten. It is one of the templates for movies where a friend group gets in trouble for sure and is terrifying and beautiful in a way that hasn't quite been captured again since.

  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)

In this zombie classic, the main problem, other than the zombie apocalypse, is the main character, Shaun's refusal to grow up and his focus on his friends rather than his relationship with his girlfriend. So while the world is fighting to survive or trying to eat whoever is still alive, Shaun goes on a quest with his best friend to save the people he loves, his mom and his girlfriend. This hilarious film was directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Simon Pegg, who also stars as Shaun. It's a favorite horror comedy that is gory and hilarious.

  • Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

A group of friends decides to wait out a hurricane at a friend's mansion, and they find out who among them really are friends. • Wolf Creek (2005)

"Wolf Creek" is a horror film where three friends are menaced by a serial killer in the Australian Outback, a vast wilderness area with a very low population. It was directed by Greg McLean and stars John Jarratt, Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi, and Nathan Phillips. At one point, the film was most famous for being a film that Quentin Tarantino really didn't like. The friend group is smaller, but the horror is still pretty big. The writer and director of the film added elements of real-life Australian serial killers to the script after he felt it was a bit generic.

  • Turistas (2006)

"Turistas" is a film about a group of people in Brazil, three friends, two vacationing British men, and one Australian woman stranded by a bus crash. John Stockwell directed this film which stars Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, Olivia Wilde, and Beau Garrett. The group is drugged and then subjected to organ removal as revenge for "gringos" who pay to get black-market organs from the Brazilian people. This is different from the usual type of slasher and is a pretty gruesome idea. It seems to echo the fears of American travelers in other countries, especially in Latin America.

Shortly after they arrive at the cabin, which looks pretty creepy, the strange demonic events start, and the film becomes an intense and gruesome ride.
