Late last year we bought you the news that a monochrome version of TOHO and Takashi Yamazaki‘s Godzilla Minus One was stomping into Japanese theaters – and it seems our prayers have been answered, as the black and white version of the gargantuan kaiju hit will also be heading to select North American theaters.
The only caveat? Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will only be available for one week starting Friday, January 26 – when it’s finished, both the b&w version and the original will end its extended theatrical run. That means when February 1 rolls around, G Man will officially end his theatrical reign.
In a statement, Yamazaki expressed his excitement at the reaction to what is now the highest grossing Japanese movie in U.S. history:
I was very happy that the North American audience embraced Godzilla Minus One […] And now I am very pleased to be able to release a black-and-white version for North America as well. Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will bring a new and visceral experience to audiences.
Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, Sakura Ando, Minami Hamabe and Hidetaka Noshioda, Godzilla Minus One followed a failed kamikaze pilot and a group of civilians trying to defend a ravaged Japan from the radiation-breathing beast. By taking the Godzilla mythos to its original post-WWII roots, Godzilla Minus One was a hit with long-time Gojira fans and newcomers alike, with many calling it the best entry into the long-running Godzilla franchise since Ishirล Honda’s 1954 original. Itโs even made it on to the Oscar shortlist for Best Visual Effects!
If you want to catch Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color you’d better grab your tickets quick – they’re sure to sell out quickly and once they’re gone, they’re gone! To get you hyped, here’s a black and white trailer from the official Godzilla Twitter account – plus a pretty damn epic new poster:
