Following the news that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the Monsterverse , the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has found its director, with Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) tapped to take on the next kaiju feature.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, who revealed the news yesterday, the new Monsterverse feature is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans.
Penning the script for the untitled upcoming Legendary Godzilla movie is Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Since its release in March earlier this year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire racked up a massive $567.6 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossest Godzilla movie of all time.
Wingard – who also directed 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong (and, of course, The Guest and You’re Next) – was said to have departed the project due to ‘timing issues’, but that his departure was ‘amicable.’
Sputore is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, with his post-apocalyptic, Hilary Swank-starring thriller I Am Mother premiering at Sundance 2019 before hitting Netflix. The film currently sits at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Hollywood Reporter also remind us that the MonsterVerse as a whole continues to go down like gangbusters, with Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla x Kong, 2014’s Godzilla, Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters all bringing in combined $2.5 billion – not to mention, spawning Apple’s well-regarded television series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Between this and Godzilla Minus One‘s recent Oscar-winning success over in Godzilla’s native Japan, it’s a great time to be a kaiju fan. We’ll bring you updates on the next entry in the MonsterVerse as soon as they stomp in.
