Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - Warner Bros.

A decade in and the MonsterVerse is still going very strong. To that end, Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced that the follow-up to this year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit theaters on March 26, 2027. While little else is known about the film for the moment, we at least know what date to circle on the ol’ calendar. Plan accordingly.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. and Legendary did a little bit of work on the release calendar recently, dating not only the new MonsterVerse film, but a new untitled event film from Dune director Denis Villeneuve as well. As for the business at hand, the sequel to Godzilla x Kong does not currently have a title. The studios were quick to get the film going, as they hired Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to write the script in early May

Adam Wingard, who directed both Godzilla vs. Kong and The New Empire, will not be returning to the director’s chair for whatever comes next. He is currently making Onslaught for A24, and he also has several other films in development, including a potential Face/Off sequel. Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) will take his place as the latest director to put his spin on Godzilla, King Kong and the rest of the Titans. Luckily, he’ll have some time to settle in as the film isn’t due to arrive for nearly three years.

The franchise started back in 2014 with director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. The MonsterVerse has since become one of the most successful cinematic universes in Hollywood. The New Empire took in $570 million at the box office, setting a new high bar for the franchise. WB and Legendary have been content to play it slow and steady.

The MonsterVerse consists of five films including 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as well as one TV show, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Though that show is getting a second season, with some spin-offs in development. In any event, it’s not like the Marvel Cinematic Universe with multiple movies coming our way every year. This is a situation where less is more.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is on VOD and Blu-ray now, with the film set to begin streaming on Max on July 4
