The Fourth of July is often associated with barbecues, fireworks and the 1996 Roland Emmerich blockbuster Independence Day, among other things. This year, monster fans can celebrate the holiday by streaming one of 2024’s biggest movies as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be available to stream on Max, just in time to celebrate America’s birthday. Warner Bros. has confirmed that the latest entry in the MonsterVerse will be available for subscribers to enjoy on July 4. Adjust your holiday plans accordingly.

Those who missed The New Empire in theaters will now have the chance to watch it from the comfort of home with ease. The film was already available on VOD, with the Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD edition hitting shelves earlier this month. But for those who didn’t want to shell out any extra money, this is probably the way to go.
Director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong hit theaters in March and served as the filmmaker’s follow up to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The film was very well received by audiences, as it grossed $570 million at the box office, a record for the MonsterVerse franchise to date. That being the case, Warner Bros. and Legendary wasted no time in getting a sequel going, tapping Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) to take the helm. Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is penning the screenplay.
Unfortunately, Wingard is busy with his new A24 flick Onslaught to return for another round of monster mayhem. But hey, the man spent the last five years steeped in the world of the Titans. It would be a lot to ask him to dive right back in. There’s nothing wrong with passing the baton. The synopsis for GxK reads as follows:
“The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
Ten years after director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla kicked things off, the MonsterVerse is arguably stronger than ever. Aside from the movies, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was recently renewed for a second season on Apple TV+. The streamer is also developing several spin-off shows set in the universe.
