In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard sheds a little light on the onscreen dynamic of his two Kaiju stars. Namely, that they’ll essentially be taking cues from ’80s buddy-cop movies.
Says Wingard:
“There’s a bit of a truce — Godzilla’s in control of the surface world and Kong is down in Hollow Earth … The buddy-cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always embedded with the ‘80s, and the ‘80s were prime for [that] storyline. There’s a lot of misunderstanding – the way that the monsters communicate isn’t straightforward.”
While it is absolutely not shocking to hear that Wingard remains inspired by the ’80s, we are a little surprised to hear that Godzilla and Kong will be sharing a buddy-cop dynamic this time around. Moreover, though, we’re intrigued, particularly about that bit regarding the way they communicate with one another. There’s no telling what that’ll look like in practice, but we’re damn curious to find out.
As previously reported, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire features returning cast members Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry, along with newcomer (and former Wingard MVP) Dan Stevens. Here’s an official plot synopsis, just in case you missed it the first time:
“Godzilla and the almighty Kong face a colossal threat hidden deep within the planet, challenging their very existence and the survival of the human race.”
