Continuing the trend of comedy people taking a stab at horror, following Jordan Peele and Barbarian’s Zach Cregger, several members of The Groundlings Main Company have completed their first fright feature.
McCurdy Point, which is now being submitted to film festivals, is a supernatural found-footage flick directed by Nick Paonessa and Jeremy Brothers, the latter of whom also scripted with Ryan Gaul and Kiel Kennedy. The quartet produced the movie, with Chris Gierowski (Don’t F*ck in the Woods) and Matthew Gudernatch as executive producers.
The cast is headed by Gaul (who has been seen in The Last OG, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Superstore), Kennedy (Don’t Tell Larry, Good Girls), Laird Macintosh (Shameless, AP Bio, Jimmy Kimmel Live), Patty Guggenheim (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Reno 911, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Allison Dunbar (The Sopranos, Yellowstone, Dave), Christian Roberts, and Joey Krulock.
The synopsis: “Documenting their celebratory trip to a quaint cabin in the deep woods of Maine, four friends find themselves doomed from supernatural forces they don’t understand.”

“We all work in comedy,” Gaul says, “so we were continually explaining why we were making a horror film. There’s a lot of overlap in executing horror and comedy. With both, you’re hoping to create a surprise for the audienceโwhether that surprise is a scare or a laugh.”
“At its most basic, McCurdy Point is a ghost story,” Brothers adds. “We love horrorโspecifically, films where a sense of impending dread is real. The old adage of ‘less is more’ is certainly true when working on a low-budget film, but it’s also an opportunity for us to try to tell a story without relying heavily on effects, leaning into what we love about horror films.”
