All the way back in August of 2020, we learned that Amazon had given a straight-to-series order for a new show based on David Cronenberg’s grisly classic, Dead Ringers. The limited series would be written by Alice Birch, would star the luminous Rachel Weisz (in the role Jeremy Irons once made famous), and would be bringing in directors like Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Yellowjackets), Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), and Lauren Wolkstein (The Strange Ones). Needless to say, we were very excited about everything going on here.
Beyond a handful of casting announcements, we’ve not learned much else about Amazon’s Dead Ringers in the time since, but now – according to a new report from the good folks over at Bloody Disgusting – we’ve finally got some fresh info to share!
For starters, Dead Ringers will hit Prime Video in April, which is right around the corner! Secondly, we’ve got a raft of new images to gawk at, all of which focus their attention on leading lady Rachel Weisz. Let’s take a look…
In Dead Ringers, Weisz plays two identical twin sisters, the Mantle Twins, who are “the most successful, brilliant and extraordinary people youโve never met. Identical from head to toe, these two OB-gynโs are on a mission to change the way women birth, starting with Manhattan. Drugs, pioneering but very much illegal medical research, sex and falling in love, this drama based on the David Cronenberg 80s cult classic, takes us to darker and stranger territory than we could have possibly imagined.โ
In the above photos, we get a look at the Mantle Twins, side by side. Of course we’ll have to reserve judgment until we’ve actually seen this bad boy in motion, but judging purely from these pics, it appears that this series has nailed the VFX necessary to put two Rachel Weiszes onscreen at the same time. Hey, if they could do it in 1988, this ongoing effect should be a cakewalk in 2023, right?
And, finally, we’ve got this shot of Weisz’s character (we have no idea which one this is) canoodling with Britne Oldford’s Genevieve. The couple look very happy here, but – knowing Dead Ringers – we’re guessing things don’t necessarily stay this happy forever.
Nothing further to report on the new Dead Ringers at this time, but we’re guessing a trailer will be along soon enough, and after that? Well, then it’s just a short wait until the series hits Amazon Prime on April 21st. Stay tuned for further updates on this one as they become available, we are very eager to learn (and see) more!
