Fantastic news, folk horror fans! Deadline have today revealed an exclusive first look at upcoming Cornish folk horror (that is as-of-now untitled), the debut feature from filmmaker Dean Puckett. Starring Emma Appleton (The Witcher, Everything I Know About Love), production on the indie horror took place on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor, an atmospheric and expansive area of moorland famed for its mythical beast.
Whether or not the beast will make an appearance remains to be seen, but Deadline give us a brief rundown of the plot here:
When Magpieโs husband dies in mysterious circumstances, a brutal witch-hunt threatens to tear apart an isolated religious community.
The film also stars Jodhi May (A Quiet Passion), Lewis Gribben (Silent Witness), Barney Harris (The Wheel of Time), Oliver Maltman (The Mercy), James Swanton (Dashcam), and Toby Stephens (Die Another Day).
Deadline also notes that the project was developed as part of the BFI, BBC Films, and Creative UKโs iFeatures program, with Piers Holdsworth Hunt, Kate Byers, Linn Waite, Malik Ali, Badie Ali, Hamza Ali, Evan Leighton-Davis, and Rupert Hanbury-Tenison serving as executive producers and Rebecca Wolff of Grasp the Nettle Films and Jude Goldrei of Lunar Lander Films producing.
The south-west county of England has always been an important part of the horror landscape, and has recently been spotlighted in Mark Jenkin’s award-winning Enys Men. Director Puckett (who is also a lecturer at Falmouth University) has seen his other horror shorts well recieved, with The Sermon premiering at BFI Flare and Satanโs Bite playing Cannes. He is also a lecturer at the UKโs Falmouth University.
Keep an eye out for more details on the mysterious project as and when we get them!
