Buckle up because A24 has released a trailer for the brand new religious horror flick Heretic. The studio’s latest offering hails from filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, of Haunt and 65 fame. The writing and directing duo have this time decided to enlist none other than Hugh Grant to lead the way, with the famed actor making a surprising villainous turn here. It’s something we’ve seen from him several times in recent years in films like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, to be certin. That said, he’s in full-on creep mode here. Check it out.
This has A24 written all over it. Grant seems perfectly cast as the unsuspecting, inviting presence that allows these poor missionaries to believe that everything is going to be okay. As the trailer soon shows us, it is not going to be okay. The movie is clearly trying to keep its secrets intact while giving us just enough to get the hooks in. I imagine I’m not alone in wanting to know what that blueberry pie candle smells like, despite it being the thing that kicks off the evil to come. The cast also includes Chloe East (The Fabelmans) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) The synopsis for the film reads as follows:
“Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
Beck and Woods have become increasingly prevalent voices in horror over the last handful of years. The duo wrote 2018’s A Quiet Place, which has since spawned a very successful franchise. The prequel A Quiet Place: Day One is hitting theaters later this week. They also helmed last year’s dinosaur flick 65, which gave us some non-Jurassic Park prehistoric action on the big screen.
As for the film’s stars, East is no stranger to horror, having starred in a couple of episodes of True Blood as well as 2020’s The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Thatcher, meanwhile, is becoming something of a genre staple in a hurry as a breakout on Showtime’s Yellowjackets in addition to starring in last year’s The Boogeyman. Grant, meanwhile, isn’t exactly a genre staple, to put it mildly. That said, there’s something about watching a seasoned actor getting out of their comfort zone that can be wildly entertaining.
Heretic is set to hit theaters on November 15. Be sure to check out the film’s poster featuring that blueberry pie candle below.
