Tim Story’s The Blackening debuted as part of the 2021 TIFF Midnight Madness lineup, and was quickly snatched up for distribution by Lionsgate shortly thereafter. A horror comedy co-written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, The Blackening concerns…
“…a group ofย Blackย friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize it isnโt a game.”
Now, according to a new report over at Deadline, Lionsgate has given The Blackening a release date: June 16th, 2023. Perfect timing!
Some of you may be thinking “The Blackening” sounds familiar. That might be because you caught the 2018 Comedy Central short of the same name, which inspired Story’s film:
The feature film version of The Blackening stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and former SNL star Jay Pharoah, and was quite the hit with critics at this year’s TIFF (Indiewire called it “the first great horror parody of the post-Get Out era;” Bloody Disgusting called it a “highly-entertaining” crowdpleaser). We’re excited to check it out!
For now, that’s all we have to report on The Blackening. Do stay tuned for further updates as they roll in.
